Outdoormaster Ultra XM Snow Goggles – Great Goggles Under $70

OutdoorMaster Ultra XM Snow Goggles Review

The OutdoorMaster Ski Goggles Pro is a great entry level value ski goggle. The lens swap system is great. They look good. Their lenses are not quite up to par with Smith ChromaPop or Oakley Prizm. The OutdoorMaster Ultra XM Snow Goggles are an upgraded version of the Ski Goggles Pro XM. The Ultra XM lenses now perform with the best from Smith and Oakley. They are also sold under the name OutdoorMaster Zealot Ski Goggles. Keep reading for the full story on the Ultra XM/Zealot goggles.

I got a set of OutdoorMaster Ultra XM goggles with the black frame and 13.3% VLT lens. This is also the OutdoorMaster Zealot Ski Goggle with Ninja frame and 13% VLT lens on Amazon. I also picked up an UltraLens VLT 29% Optimized Orange extra lens to use for flat light days. The extra Ultra XM lenses are available directly from OutdoorMaster. They are not available on Amazon right now. They are compatible with all OutdoorMaster Pro snow goggle lenses as well.

These are a medium fit goggle with spherical lenses. They are not the same as the also excellent OutdoorMaster Ultra XL which are a large fit with a toric lens.

Price

The OutdoorMaster Ultra XM goggles cost $68 on the OutdoorMaster website. You can use our discount code ERO15 to get 15% off of that. They come with a hard goggle/lens case and a microfiber goggle bag for storage and cleaning.

They do not include a second lens. This is a small miss. Any goggle that has a really easy to use magnetic lens swapping system should come with 2 lenses so you can use it.

Extra Ultra XM lenses are available direct from OutdoorMaster for $36. Pro lenses which also fit it are available for $25.

A set of goggles and extra lens will run about $90. This still puts them far below the $200 cost of a set of Smith I/O Mag goggles from Smith Optics with similar performance and features.

Lenses

The lenses of the Ultra XM/Zealot are what set it apart from the less expensive Pro model. They have a spherical lens. They have the same overall shape as the Pro model lens. They have much better clarity, focus, and color filtering for flat light.

These lenses have Color Optimization Technology which filters out blue light shades. This helps you see snow terrain better especially on flat light condition days. This is very similar to how Smith ChromaPop lenses work. When looking through the lenses everything will have an orange shade like ChromaPop.

They also have Super HD Technology. The lens focuses the image on your retina making everything look super crystal clear. It works. I was skiing with these goggles a few days ago in late afternoon in clear skies and everything just looked wow.

They have a new upgraded performance anti fog coating that performs 3 times better than the anti fog coating on the Pro XM goggle lenses.

What this means is that you can see really well with these goggles on. The lenses of the Pro goggle model were its weak point. The lenses of the Ultra XM model are very much its strong point. You can clearly see the difference between them if you ski a few runs with each. I love the Ultra XL goggles and they are what I personally ski with most of the time. If I wanted smaller fit goggles I would choose these in a second for their lenses.

All the Ultra XM and Pro XM lenses have 100% UV400 UV protection to keep your eyes safe from sun damage.

Extra lenses

There are currently 6 Ultra XM replacement lenses available with a VLT range from 13 to 29%. This covers most bright light and daytime flat light conditions. The goggles are compatible with the 20 available Pro XM lenses as well. The VLT range of the Pro XM lenses goes down to a 99% VLT clear lens for night skiing. There is also a Photochromic Pro XM lens also for those who like a 1 lens for all condition approach.

Frame

These goggles have the same frame and strap as the Outdoor Master Pro XM goggles. They have different strap designs but that is the only difference in the frame. The frame is made of standard TPU construction that is flexible and soft enough. They have triple layer face foam for comfort. The strap has silicone beads to keep it from sliding on your helmet.

I find the frames on these goggles comfortable to wear. They have a flatter shape than some other goggles but are soft enough to bend and conform to your face.

Magnetic lens swapping system

These goggles have the same great interchangeable lens system found on the Ski Goggles Pro XM model. They have 8 sets of magnets. It holds the lens securely. It has a similar feel to a set of Anon M4 Toric goggles. I have no worries that the lens will come off while skiing or in a big yardsale level fall.

Bright light performance

The Ultra lens with color optimization and HD clarity is excellent. The 13% VLT lens works well on a bright day. You get a crystal clear view with very little distortion.

The blue filtering is on the stronger side giving you a bit more orange tint than other lenses. This really helps with seeing the snow terrain. It takes a little getting used to. After wearing these goggles for a while I love how clear everything looks.

Flat light performance

The heavy blue filtering in the Ultra lenses really helps bring out the terrain surface. They are several degrees better than the OutdoorMaster Pro XM low light lenses. The 29% VLT lens works really well on drab overcast days where the 13% lens is too dark. It works on flat light days as well as any lens from Oakley or Smith.

Anti-Fog performance

I have never had a problem with the OutdoorMaster Pro XM goggles fogging on me. These goggles have an upgraded anti fog coating on the lenses compared to the Pro XM. These will perform even better. They have enough ventilation for anything you will throw at them while resort skiing.

Field of view

These Ultra XM goggles have peripheral vision in line with other medium fit goggles. It’s not as expansive as a large fit toric goggle like the Ultra XL. It’s much better than basic flat lens medium fit goggles.

Helmet Compatibility

I tried these goggles with several current helmets and it looks good with all of them. They have very little gap with most helmets. The lens shape blends in well. They are a perfect fit with the OutdoorMaster Diamond MIPS and Kelvin helmets. See the image below to see how they work with different helmets.

OTG Goggle

These goggles are designed to be OTG compatible. They fit over my glasses. I don’t feel my glasses lens touching the goggle lens. I prefer large fit goggles for wearing over glasses. I could wear these over my glasses if I had to for a couple of hours.
