About Outdoor Master

Outdoor Master is a California based outdoor gear company started by a bunch of skiing enthusiasts. They recognized that to get functional gear that worked well you had to pay very high name brand prices. Low cost cheap snow sport gear had a tendency to break and fall apart. Broken gear is wasted money. They went on a mission to create great working gear at affordable prices. They started with ski goggles which have proven to be one of the best performing low cost ski goggles available today.

OutdoorMaster Ski Goggles Guide

Outdoor Master currently makes at least 7 adult and 2 children’s ski goggles. There is some overlap and compatibility between models. Several versions use the same Pro model frame. They have spherical, toric, and cylindrical lens shaped models. Let’s start with a look at the adult ski and snowboard goggles.

Outdoor Master Adult Large Fit Ski Goggles

Outdoor Master ULTRA XL Snow Goggles

OM Ultra XL Product Image
  • Toric Lens-Ultimate Field of Vision – With the latest lens shape design on the market – Toric lens, it combines the low distortion and clearer view of the cylindrical lens and the wide peripheral vision of the spherical lens
  • Color-Optimization Technology – provides high definition optics by filtering part of the blue light and thus boosts the contrast and greatly improves color brightness. It has been proven to highlight irregularities with superior visibility
  • Super HD Technology – Luminous Refractive Pressed lens offers the premium clarity with great contrast enhancement. It largely reduces the refraction which allows the focus to fall precisely on the retina

Ultra XL and Ultra XM on a sunny day
Outdoor Master Ultra XL (left) and Ultra XM (right)

Summary

The Outdoor Master Ultra XL goggles are their latest and greatest ski goggle offering. These goggles have the latest toric lens shape as well as their Ultra lens technology. They have an improved frame with upgraded ventilation and triple layer foam.

The Ultra XL goggles have Color Optimization Technology that filters out blue colors. This makes it easier to see terrain on flat light days.

The lenses have Super HD Technology using a Luminous Refractive Pressed lens. The goggle lens focuses the image precisely on your retinas. This gives you excellent optical clarity.

This is the same way Smith Optics ChromaPop and Oakley Prizm lenses make it easier to see on flat light days. Unlike the Pro and OTG goggles, the Ultra lenses perform just as well as Oakley Prizm and Smith ChromaPop.

The toric lens shape is a hybrid between a spherical lens and a cylindrical lens. It gives you a low distortion in the center of the lens. It gives you an increased field of view in your peripheral vision. You can see in the image below how the Toric lens doesn’t bulge out as much as the spherical.

ultra XL vs Pro lens shape
Ultra XL Toric (left) and Pro Spherical (right)

They have an improved anti-fog coating and better ventilation than the Pro and XM goggles. This translates to exceptional anti fog performance on the slopes.

The frames are large fit. They are bigger than the Pro/XM snow goggles frames. The triple layer foam uses a softer inner layer face foam similar to what you will find on a set of Smith I/O goggles. It has a softer feel. The nose area is cinched up giving you more nose room and a more comfortable feel. They are OTG compatible for people wearing prescription glasses.

Ultra XL pro frame back
Pro frame (left) and Ultra XL (right)

Like all Outdoor Master goggles with swappable lenses, they include a hard lens case. This keeps your spare lenses from getting scratched in your bag. As a bonus, these goggles come with an extra lens. You get one lens of your choice and a second lens suitable for low light and night skiing conditions.

The Ultra XL snow goggles are for someone who wants great ski goggles and high performance lenses but doesn’t want to pay for the Oakley or Smith name. These are without a doubt, the best ski goggle out there right now for under $100 or $200 for that matter.

The Ultra XL retails for $99.99 including a second lens. You can get it even cheaper using our discount code.

Vision XL at PM side view

Summary

The Outdoor Master Vision XL goggles have similar construction and lens technology as the Pro goggles. Think of them as an upgrade to the Pro goggles with a new and improved toric shape and large fit. The lenses are polarized as well. They give you the lower distortion and better field of view that comes from a toric lens shape.

The Vision goggles have a slightly framed look with frame showing on the top and bottom. The Ultra XL is a pure frameless look. Both have the same 8 magnet lens swapping system we have loved since it was introduced with the Pro goggles. They are an OTG ski goggle with cutouts in the face foam making it easier to fit over prescription glasses.

These have a similar frame design and construction as the Pro goggle. It has the same triple layer foam as the Pro uses. It does not have the upgraded foam that the Ultra XL has or the cinched in nose foam.

They are available in a variety of lens and frame combinations. They all include 2 lenses and a hard lens case for the second lens. The second lens is good for low light or night skiing days.

These ski and snowboard goggles are for someone who wants a great value large fit goggle with advanced easy to swap toric lenses.

The Vision XL retails for $74.99 including a second lens.

Summary

The Outdoor Master Classic XM Snow Goggles are a new basic good performing goggle. These are single lens goggles with an updated frame shape from the OTG goggles.

These are large fit goggles with a taller lens than the OTG goggles. They will fit glasses that are 2.6 inches tall. The OTG design fit glasses up to 1.65 inches tall. They are still a framed design goggle. The frame is lower profile than the OTG goggles.

They have dual pane lenses and good ventilation to keep them fog free. The inner lens has the upgraded Ultra anti fog layer that was introduced with the Ultra XL and Ultra XM goggles. One of the complaints of the OTG goggles was fogging when worn with glasses. These should do better.

They include an elastic goggle cover that you can put on your goggle when not in use. This helps keep you from scratching your goggles when you knock your head into things. I regularly forget that my helmet and goggles are much bigger than my head and knock them into things. I have a big scratch in my Smith I/O7 lens from hitting the tailgate of my SUV as a nice reminder.

The Outdoor Master Classic XM goggles are a good choice for anyone who wants basic cheap ski goggles with good performance.

The Classic XM goggle with cover retails for $32.99 making it the cheapest OutdoorMaster adult snow goggle.

The Ultra lens has better clarity and color differentiation. It has an improved anti fog coating as well. They are called Outdoor Master Zealot Ski Goggles on Amazon.

Summary

The Outdoor Master OTG goggles are the most popular snow goggle available on Amazon. They have over 16,000 reviews and counting. The OTG goggles are Over The Glasses compatible as their name implies. They are also great all around basic ski goggles. They are available in a large variety of lens and frame colors. They have a VLT range from 11% to 99% depending on the lens you pick.

These goggles have a little bit more styling to them than most other basic ski goggles. They have all the basic anti fog features. They have dual pane lenses, anti fog coating, and ventilation. Pulse XL at powder mountain

Summary

The Outdoor Master Pulse XL Snow Goggles are their latest cylindrical lens offering. They have a very easy to use non-magnetic lens change system and quality lenses. They are priced to fit in the under $50 ski goggle range. They are one of my favorite ski goggles to wear since I got them.

These goggles are large fit and have an excellent field of view with minimal distortion. They have similar quality lenses as the Pro XM model but in a flat lens package. They do not have any color filtering or fancy lens tech in the standard lenses. They do have an available orange lens for flat light conditions. They do not come with a second lens.

They do not have a magnetic lens change system. They use a couple of sliders and a few snap in tabs. It is very easy to use and takes no effort to align the lens. It is the best non-magnetic system I have come across so far.

The fit is very comfortable and they look great. I think the Diamond MIPS and Lazurite helmet styles look better with flat lens goggles.

The Pulse XL goggles retail for $52.99 so they are well under $50 without discount code.

Meander Goggles on mountain

Summary

The Outdoor Master Meander XL Snow Goggles are their older cylindrical lens model. Like the Pulse XL it is also large fit. It also is priced in the under $50 ski goggle range.

The one area that the Meander XL outperforms the the Pulse XL is for OTG users. The Meander is one of the few cylindrical lens goggles that I find comfortable to wear with glasses. My glasses lens doesn’t touch the goggle lens. The frame and foam sides are nicely cut out with plenty of clearance for my frames.

The Meander goggle has a magnetic lens swap system that also has a slide latch and a few alignment tabs. It works. It’s a bit awkward to use and takes some effort to get all the tabs aligned while fighting against the magnets. After that get the slide latch to hook in place. The Pulse XL goggle is much easier to change lenses.

The Meander lenses perform similar to the Pulse XL lenses. Both are clear and have minimal distortion. Both have an available orange lens to use for flat light days. The Meander lens quality looks a bit less than the Pulse. I can see air gaps in the adhesive between the lens layers on both Meander lenses I have. I suspect after several years of use they will develop fogging issues.

The Meander XL retails for $45.99 on the Outdoor Master website.

Summary

Outdoor Master Goggle Lens Compatibility

Most of the Outdoor Master goggles with interchangeable lenses use a similar magnetic system. They all use 8 magnets to attach the lens to the frame. See the below animation for a demonstration of the system on the Ultra XL goggles.

ultra xl lens swap

The Pulse XL and Meander XL use different lens change systems. The Pulse XL has a really slick non-magnetic system that is fast and easy to use. The Meander uses a mixed magnetic and latches system that is awkward at best. The below animation shows the Pulse XL lens system.

OM Pulse XL Lens swap animation

The Pro or XM family all use the same frame design so they can interchange lenses. This includes the Pro, Eco-Friendly XM, and Ultra XM. The Ultra XL and Vision XL each have unique frames and their lenses are not compatible with any other goggles. See the below chart for lens compatibility.

Outdoor Master Goggles Lens Compatibility

Ski Goggle Lens Shape

There are 3 popular lens shapes that goggles use. Each has advantages and disadvantages. The 3 shapes are Cylindrical, Spherical, and Toric

  • Cylindrical lenses are flat lenses. Think of the shape you get if you cut the lens out of a cylinder. They are flat in the vertical direction and curved in the horizontal direction. Flat lenses are the cheapest to make. They have more visual distortion in the middle of the goggles but less towards the edges.
  • Spherical lenses are curved lenses. They are the shape you would get if you cut the lens out of a ball. They have the same radius in both the horizontal direction and vertical direction. They have a more poofed out shape in the middle of the goggle. Spherical lenses have less visual distortion in the middle of the lens and more towards the edges.
  • Toric lenses are the latest most advanced shape. Toric lenses are a cross between spherical and cylindrical lenses. They are the shape you would get if you cut your lens out of the side of a donut. They have a much larger radius in the horizontal direction than the vertical direction. They look like curved lens shape but do not look as poofed out in the middle. They provide less distortion in the center of the lens and outside edges of the lens.
