The Wittkop City Bicycle Saddle is a well made bike seat from an long time established brand. Wittkop has been making bike saddles since 1898. The City Saddle is their widest design with the most padding. It uses memory foam and has 5 design zones with different stiffness. The BLUEWIND Bike Seat is a great low cost comfort bike seat. It uses memory foam and shock absorbing balls to attach the frame. The seat has adequate memory foam padding for most riders. The seat uses a fake leather for the covering that isn’t very breathable and absorbs water. The seat can become a bit spongy on long rides.

The foam and shock absorbers are great for shorter rides. For longer rides, the lack of breathability and the foam packing out make it not that comfortable.

The truth about bike seats

Bike seats are not a wide size fits all problem. Everyone has different width and shape to their sit bones. Everyone has different riding styles. A bike seat for someone riding short trips around town will be very different from a bike seat for someone riding 3 hour long mountain bike rides. What is comfortable for someone else may not be comfortable for you.

The more you ride, the more your butt tissue hardens up and the soreness of sitting on a bike will go away. The more you ride, the better it feels and the more fun it gets. A new seat can help but it won’t do everything. Don’t be afraid to try out a few different seats to find what you really like.

Why is my bike seat uncomfortable

Bike seat discomfort comes from 2 main sources. Sit bone sourness and chafing in the crotch area. To solve the first problem you need to find a bicycle seat that is the correct width for your sit bones. You don’t want your seat to be too narrow or your sit bones won’t rest on it. Your bike seat needs to be adjusted so it is in the correct position for you. To learn more about seat positioning click here.

The second problem, chafing results from having a seat that is too wide. For short duration rides this isn’t a problem since you don’t have time to chafe down there. For long duration rides of more than an hour this becomes much more of a problem.

Extra wide seats with lots of padding are great for rides up to an hour long. For bike rides longer than an hour, those narrow, uncomfortable looking, bike seats starting getting a lot more comfortable.

Why do my sit bones hurt when cycling

The simple answer is that your sit bones hurt because there is too much pressure in the soft tissue and not the bones. This can be from a seat that is too narrow so the weight isn’t supported by the bone. This can also be from a seat with too much padding. Your bouncing around too much in the padding and weight isn’t resting on the bones.

The more you bike, the more the soft tissue in that area hardens up and you will hurt less. The first few weeks to a month of cycling in the spring just never feels great. After a winter of not biking, all your butt tissue is softened up.

Some soreness when you start biking is natural and it gets better with more hours spent on the bike. Changing bike seats can help. Changing seats won’t work a miracle.

Is a wide bike seat more comfortable

For shorter bike rides that are an hour or less, a wider bike seat with more padding will be more comfortable. Chafing problems caused by wide seats and too much padding won’t show up until you start doing longer rides. If you are regularly riding for an hour or more, your tissue around your sitbones is hardened up. This means you can probably tolerate a narrow, stiff bike seat.

How do I know what width bike saddle to buy?

Bike shops have devices for measuring your sit bones. This can help you make sure you get a wide enough bike seat. Most humans have sit bone widths between 100mm and 150mm or 4 to 6 inches. Any seat wider than 6.5 inches will contain the sit bones of almost any human alive.

This measurement only becomes important if you are buying a narrow bike. Narrow bike seats are best for long duration rides and high performance riding.

Any bike can be a good bike for an overweight person. The easiest bikes to ride are mountain bikes and hybrid bikes. These bikes have straight handlebars and upright seating positions making them more stable and easier to ride. If you really have difficulty balancing on a bicycle due to your weight, there are also tricycle bikes. These have 2 rear wheels so balance is never an issue. These are great for people who can’t ride a regular bicycle.

Another great invention of the past few years is the pedal assist electric bike. These bikes have electric motors that assist you in pedaling the bike. These bikes are wonderful for people who had leg, knee, hip, ankle, or foot injuries that made pedaling hard. I know several people who can now bike again because of these. They are just as good for exercise and weight loss as a normal bike. You still have to pedal to make them go. Pedaling isn’t as hard as it normally is.

Q: Can an overweight person ride a bike?

Yes. An overweight person can still ride a bike. Mountain bikes with lower gearing, pedal assist electric bikes or trike bikes all can allow someone with health issues to bike. Bikes can handle big people. One of my best riding friends is a 6.5 foot over 300 lb person and his mountain bike can take it.

Q: How can I make my bike seat more comfortable?

The best but most unpopular answer to this question is ride the bike more. The more you ride, the tougher the skin and tissues surrounding your sit bones will become. Biking will become less sore and more comfortable.

If you want to try and make your existing seat more comfortable because you can’t bear it and you don’t want a new seat, there is an answer. Try a seat cover that adds more padding to your bike seat. These add another thick layer of foam to your seat increasing the cushiness of it.
