How To Choose The Best Rechargeable Flashlight Under $50 – Buying Guide

Brightness – Lumens

Lumens are a measurement of brightness. The more lumens a light has, the brighter it will be.

The SI unit of luminous flux, equal to the amount of light emitted per second in a unit solid angle of one steradian from a uniform source of one candela.

For more information regarding lumens look here. Please see the below video for a demonstration of different levels of lumens at different distances.

Spotlight verses Floodlight

The light emitted from a flashlight can be either a focused spotlight or a more dispersed floodlight. If your trying to light something specific from a distance you may want a spotlight. If you are trying to light up a room or outdoor area you should probably look more for a more dispersed light beam or floodlight pattern. Some flashlights have an adjustable zoom to change between a spotlight and floodlight. Please see the video below for a demonstration on spotlight vs floodlight.

Water Resistance Rating aka IPX4

The water resistance of a flashlight or other object is rated in the form IPX4 or IPX8 etc.. What does it mean? The rating is a combination of 2 numbers. X is the rating for dust exposure. X means that it wasn’t tested so has no resistance to dust. The second number which is 4 in a lot of cases means that the flashlight is protected from splashing water but is not protected against submersion. Below is a list of classifications.

  • IPX0 – No protection from water.
  • IPX1 – Protected from dripping water
  • IPX2 – Protected from tilted at 15 degrees
  • IPX3 – Protected from spraying water
  • IPX4 – Protected from splashing water
  • IPX5 – Protected from water jets
  • IPX6 – Protected from powerful water jets
  • IPX7 – Protected from submersion in water up to 3 feet (1 meter)
  • IPX8 – Protected from continuous immersion greater than 3 feet (1 meter)

Battery type

Almost all modern rechargeable flashlights include a lithium ion battery. These have much better capacity and power output than nicad or alkaline rechargeable batteries of the past. They hold a charge for a much longer time while sitting around. They do require more care when charging. A good charger should have built in circuitry to prevent overcharging. Any flashlight that is still sold with nicad rechargeable batteries should be avoided because there are better options out there.

Bulb Type

There are several bulb types out there. LED’s are the current most popular type for good reason. They produce the brightest like with the least amount of power. They also have very good reliability with much longer life than incandescet bulbs. You may also find halogen or fluorescent bulbs out there as well.

Flashlight construction

Flashlight bodies can be made from several materials. Plastic and Aluminum are the most common. A flashlight with an aluminum or other metal body will be more durable. In the instance of tactical flashlights, a metal bodied flashlight can be used for several other purposes including self defense. A well made plastic body can be very durable as well. Plastic construction will be more lightweight than metal if carrying weight is important to you.

Size and weight

Flashlight size can be very important. If you want to use a flashlight backpacking you will want a small lightweight flashlight. If you are using it as a spotlight on a boat, the size will not be so critical but the brightness will matter much more. Think about how you will use your flashlight when you pick one out.

Modes

Many flashlights have several operating modes. Most have high and low power. Some lights have flashing strobe modes or an SOS mode that emits SOS in morse code. An SOS code will be much more important for a flashlight used out in the woods than one for home use. Battery power will last much longer on low power modes. You may not always need that 2000 lumens of light.

Rechargeable Flashlight FAQ

Q: How long will a rechargable flashlight battery last on a charge?

You can get between 1 and 40 hours of light from a full charged rechargeable flashlight. The brighter a flashlight is, the more power it will use. The battery will last longer on lower power settings. To get the longest battery life, use the lowest power setting that you can and still be able to see what you want to see.

Q: How long will it take to recharge a flashlight battery?

Most rechargeable flashlights take between 4 and 6 hours to charge.

Q: How do I charge a rechargeable flashlight?

Most rechargeable flashlights charge either from a USB cable or they will have some other cable that plugs into a wall outlet in some cases a 12 volt car outlet.

Q: How many lumens do I need?

This depends on how bright a light you need. 600 lumens is just bright enough to mountain bike on a trail at night. Lights over 1000 lumens will really light up a room. If you need a really bright spotlight to shine a long distance you might want more. If you just need to light up the inside of a small tent at night you may only need 100-200 lumens.

Q: How durable are rechargeable flashlights?

Like everything else in life, you tend to get what you pay for. The common failure points of a flashlight are the light bulb and battery. There are much longer lasting bulbs and batteries that cost more. A $10 rechargeable flashlight may not last for years and years before something fails. A $100 rechargeable flashlight probably won’t last 10 times longer than a $10 flashlight.

Q: Are rechargeable flashlights heavy or big?

Lithium batteries have a very high energy density so they can be lighter and more powerful than the size size alkaline non-rechargeable battery. A rechargeable flashlight should not be any heavier than a similar flashlight that uses disposable batteries.

Q: What is a spotlight?

A spotlight flashlight is a light with a high powered and focused light beam. It is meant to light up a small area at a distance. The light is focused so it won’t light up a room or campsite well.

Q: What is a headlamp?

A headlamp is a small flashlight that is worn on your head like a headband. These are great for handsfree operation while your working with your hands. These are great to use while camping for setting up tents at night or out sailing so your hands are free.

Q: What is a tactical flashlight?

A tactical flashlight is a flashlight that was made for police or military use. It can be a flashlight and a self defense weapon. It will be a small hand held flashlight with a bright light and metal construction. The ring around the edge of the lens or bezel may be sharp or have a serrated edge. They market this as useful for breaking glass windows such as a car window. In reality, it is meant so the flashlight can function as a self defense weapon.
