The top 9 best paddle boards for dogs

1 – Red Paddle Co 10’6″ RIDE MSL

Top Pick
red paddle co ride product image
  • EXCLUSIVE, LIGHTWEIGHT, DURABLE MSL MATERIAL – ultra durable, low weight board you can rely on. We don’t cut corners to ensure your board uses the best available material & delivers the best experience possible.
  • HIGH PRESSURE CONSTRUCTION – No compromise on construction means your board is built to take 18-25PSI. (10-12 PSI more pressure than standard inflatable SUP’s). Giving you the most rigid board & the best paddling experience available.
  • 5 YEAR WARRANTY PROMISE – Your board comes with a 5 year promise, so you know that your board will stand up to anything you can throw at it.
  • PREMIUM STANDARD ACCESSORIES – Double chambered, high pressure Titan 2 Pump, Heavy Duty All Terrain Wheeled Carry Bag are premium components that come standard.

The Red Paddle Co 10’6″ Ride is a great all around and beginner board. Its clean deck design works especially well for dogs. It is available in 3 lengths with the 10’6″ being the most common version of it.

Red Paddle Co is one of the most popular paddleboard brands around the world. They make high end innovative boards that are both very stiff and very light. Their patented MSL process produces a lighter and stiffer board. It allows the board to be inflated to over 20psi.

The deck has an embossed pattern covering most of the deck. It is smooth enough to be comfortable. It has a diamond pattern at the rear that gives you extra grip for pivot turns. The front of the deck has 3 flat bungee straps for storing gear. The flat bungees are low profile and are easier for dogs to walk across than traditional round bungees. There are no bungees or D-Rings in the rear of the board.

The Ride has 2 fixed fins. Rather than use a 3 fin setup or a large removable fin they opted for 2 larger fixed fins. This arrangement gives great tracking and stability without having a fin to take on and off every time you use the board.

The Red Paddle Co Ride comes in a package that includes the board, a pump, and roller backpack. It also includes a repair kit. Depending on where you buy it, it may or may not come with a paddle. I recommend going to Green Water Sports where it comes with an aluminum paddle and leash.

The Titan 2 Pump is a nice upgrade from the hand pump included with any other brand. It has a removable handle, folding legs, and a switch to toggle between high and low pressure modes. All the parts of the pump are replaceable. I still prefer to use an electric pump. If I have to hand pump, I appreciate a high quality pump like the Titan 2.

The roller backpack is nicely padded and made of solid heavy duty materials. It is comfortable to carry as a backpack.

No paddle is included with any of the Red Paddle Co boards. You will have to add another $100-$200 for paddle onto the cost.

On the water performance

The 4.7 inch thickness makes you feel a little closer to the water than a 6 inch paddleboard. It gives the board a stiffer feel than a 4 inch thick board. When pumped up to 20 psi this is a very stiff board compared to most inflatable paddleboards.

The extra stiffness and thinner board make it feel very stable. The 32 inch width also helps with stability. The board is light at 22 lbs but not so light that it feels like it is getting thrown around by the breeze and waves.

The board moves through waves easier than a 33-34inch board. It is a good all around shape that is easy to turn. It is stable enough you won’t have to worry about giving your dog an unintended swim if they don’t want one.

The 2 fin setup works very well for tracking. It feels as good as a 3 fin setup without having to fuss with a removable fin. It doesn’t give you the flexibility of a larger fin or smaller fin.

The board has a stated weight capacity of 240 lbs. It should have no trouble at all handling that weight or a bit more. It will work with any adult and a decent sized dog.

  • Size – 10’6″ x 32″ x 4.7″ thick
  • Weight – 22 lbs
  • Weight Capacity – 240 lbs
  • Material – 2 Layer PVC laminate
  • Paddle – Some vendors do not package with a paddle.
  • D-Rings – 8
  • Accessories – Double action pump, backpack, repair kit

Red Paddle Co Ride rating

What we liked

  • Stiff lightweight board
  • Clean deck with flat bungees
  • Easy to paddle shape with decent tracking

What we didn’t like

  • Does not include a paddle and leash from all sellers.
  • High cost

2 – iRocker All-Around

Editor’s Choice
iRocker All Around Product Image
  • EXTREMELY STABLE, RIGID iROCKER INFLATABLE PADDLE BOARD – Inflatable Paddle Board is 10′ Long x 32″ Wide x 6″ Thick. Board Weight 24 lbs. Weight Limit of up to 370lbs Great for taller riders or multiple passengers.
  • HIGH QUALITY ADJUSTABLE CARBON PADDLE – Floating carbon paddle is less than half the weight of a standard aluminum paddle
  • FULL THROTTLE, DUAL CHAMBER, TRIPLE ACTION HAND PUMP – Easy to use 25” triple action dual chamber hand pump comes with an integrated pressure gauge and inflates your board up fast.

The iRocker All-Around is a great paddleboard to share with your dog. It is a longer board with lots of stability and plenty of weight capacity. It is 32 inches wide giving it lots of forgiveness for giving your dog a ride.

The board has 3 removable fins. The fin use latches to stay in place so there is no plastic tab to worry about losing or breaking.

The board is made of a 3 layer PVC laminate for stiffness and durability. The deck has a diamond grid deck pad. The deck pad is one piece and is the same diamond grid pattern underfoot and in the tail area. The board has 20 D-Rings with bungees and handles at the front and rear. There is plenty of room in front and behind you for a small to medium sized dog to stand without being on the bungees.

Overall, the iRocker All-Around is one of the best beginner paddle board packages out there.

The board comes as a complete package including a 3 piece carbon paddle and a triple action pump. This is one of the better spec’d packages out there without any parts that leave you wishing for an upgrade right away.

The backpack is nice with rollers. It has a pocket and bungee on the front for storing accessories. It has plenty of room for the board and accessories inside.

On the water performance

The Cruiser is a 11′ x 32″ wide board. The length gives it good glide. The 32 inch width is a nice compromise between stability and being able to paddle through chop and waves. It will paddle through small chop without too much effort. The board tail is tapered enough to still be easy to turn. As it’s name implies, it is a good overall board that will serve you and your dog well.

The board has a stated weight capacity of 425 lbs. Heavier paddlers over 350 lbs have found the board to be a bit soft and difficult to use.

  • Size – 11′ x 32″ x 6″ thick
  • Weight – 26 lbs
  • Weight Capacity – 435 lbs
  • Material – 3 Layer PVC laminate
  • Paddle – 3 piece carbon paddle
  • D-Rings – 20
  • Accessories – triple action pump, backpack, leash

iRocker All-Around rating

What we liked

  • Carbon paddle and triple action pump
  • Wide stable easy to paddle board
  • Lots of D-Rings for mounting accessories

What we didn’t like

  • Takes some effort to paddle into waves and chop
  • We prefer grooved deck pad under foot

bigger guy on outdoormaster sup

The Chasing Blue Infinite is a great all around board that can be used by beginners and experienced paddlers. It is 10’6″ long and 34″ wide. The weight capacity is rated at 320 lbs and we have tested with an over 300 lb paddler. This board will have plenty of weight capacity for most paddlers and any size dog. The tail is narrowed to make it easier to turn and suitable for small wave surfing. This makes the board very stable and easy to paddle so you won’t risk spilling your dog.

Besides its size and stability, this board is loaded up with features. It has 22 D-Rings for attaching bungees and accessories. It comes with a front and rear bungee. It also includes a variety of GoPro, Camera, and accessory mounts you can attach to the board.

It has 7 handles to make it easy to carry. It also has 2 safety handles at the front that you can grab on it while seated or kneeling while the board goes through waves. It has a very durable 2 layer laminate construction with taped reinforced rails that can take some abuse. At 22.5 lbs it is still easy for one person to carry.

The deck pad is really well thought out. The footpad is grooved for easy water drainage and foot comfort. The tail kick pad is a diamond grid pattern to give you a bit of extra traction for kick turns. The foot pad is large enough that it will fit most paddlers with room for an average sized dog.

The Chasing Blue Infinite isn’t the cheapest inflatable paddle board out there. It is one of the easiest to learn to paddle and versatile enough to grow and let you try out other SUP activities such as rivers, waves and yoga.

This board includes all the accessories you expect from an inflatable paddleboard package. It includes a double action pump, 3 piece aluminum paddle, ankle leash, paddle leash, repair kit, and waterproof cellphone case. It has a great roller backpack to make carrying easier. The bag is very well made. The only complaint is that the bag has no extra pockets for accessories or other items.

Sometimes the board is bundled with the OutdoorMaster Shark 2 electric pump making it an even better value. See our review of the Shark 2 pump to learn more.

On the water performance

On the water, the Chasing Blue Infinite is very stable due to its 34 inch width. It is one of the easiest boards available for a beginner to stand up on. It still glides reasonably well. Better than a 10′ or shorter board. Its 3 fin setup makes it track well. This board will grow with you and will be fine for trying out small wave surfing or yoga.

The board glides and paddles very easily on calm water. It takes a little more effort to paddle into chop and wind due to its wide width and 10’6″ length. It turns very easily thanks to its narrowed tail. This would make an excellent board to enjoy paddling with your dog.

  • Size – 10′ 6″ x 34″ x 6″ thick
  • Weight – 22.5 lbs
  • Weight Capacity – 320 lbs
  • Material – 2 Layer PVC laminate
  • Paddle – 3 piece alluminum alloy
  • D-Rings – 22
  • Accessories – Double action pump, roller backpack, ankle leash, paddle lease, phone case, repair kit

What we liked

  • Stable, easy to paddle, and works with paddlers up to its 320 lb weight limit
  • 22 D-Rings and lots of handles for versatility and easy transport
  • Quality accessories such as roller backpack and 3 piece paddle

What we didn’t like

  • For the price we would prefer a carbon paddle
  • Could use more pockets in the carry bag

4 – Starboard Inflatable 12′ x 33″ iGO Deluxe

Starboard Go 12 ft product image
  • LIGHT, AWESOME, AND FUN – Woven PVC combined with fusion construction and welded seams produces the lightest, stiffest boards available
  • Go fast and stable design – The 12’0” has the fastest glide and is ultra-stable, giving you the most stable platform to paddle on, without compromising speed or stability
  • Welded Rail Technology – The Welded Rail Technology creates a completely airtight, mechanically bonded seam without the risk of glue weakening over time. This makes Starboard inflatable paddle boards stronger and longer lasting

The Starboard 12′ x 33″ iGO Deluxe is a great performer on the water with advanced construction. The iGo deluxe boards feature welded seams and woven PVC construction. This means that the board will be stiffer, lighter, and more durable. The iGo 12′ x 33″ is longer with a clean deck design with no bungee in the rear giving you plenty of room for your dog.

Welded seams mean that no glue is used to put the main structure of the board together. The seams are heated and pressed together creating a mechanical seam. Glue deteriorates over time. It is affected by UV rays and also chemicals in the water. I welded board will last much longer than a glued together board.

Woven fabric has less space between fibers making it stiffer and lighter. Because of this, the board needs fewer space threads than other boards to get the same stiffness. They use a fusion process to connect the 2 layers similar to the MSL technology that Red Paddle Co uses. A Starboard iGo with Deluxe construction will be stiff, light, and last a long time. For a little less cost you can get Zen construction. It is a step down in stiffness and performance.

The iGo board has a retracting shoulder strap making it easy to carry. You can keep your hand free for your dog’s leash. The strap also works as a paddle holder.

The board has a bungee on the front deck for storage. The front bungee only uses 4 D-Rings making it more compact than other boards. Some dogs do not like walking on bungees. This is something to look at if you have a dog that dislikes standing and sitting on bungees.

The board has a single removable fin. The fin attaches with a US Fin Box that doesn’t need any tools.

Starboard iGo boards do not come with paddles. Places like Green Water Sports can package one with the board.

The backpack that comes with Starboard boards is one of the best out there. It just feels much more durable and well put together. The fabric is made from recycled plastic bottles. Not only is the bag durable but it’s better for the environment.

The Starboard Tiki pump is also one of the better pumps coming with an SUP package. It has a removeable base to make it easier to store in the bag. The inflate hose attaches to the pump body instead of the handle. You don’t have a hose flapping around while pumping and it gives the pump more efficient air flow.

The board comes with a really nice lightweight leash as well and a small repair kit.

On the water performance

The 12′ x 33″ iGo has a nice stable all around shape. It has more volume in the front and rear of the board making it more stable. This also makes it easier to put your weight rearward and do kick turns. The deck pad has a raised pad where your foot needs to go. Your dog may not appreciate kick turns. It’s a nice feature when you are paddling alone.

The single fin design makes the board track very well. 1 deeper fin is more efficient than a 2 or 3 fin design. At 12′ long the board will glide well. The shape of the board is not a touring shape so it has more drag and doesn’t cut through wave and chop as well.

The board has a very stiff feeling. It doesn’t feel bouncy even with heavier riders. It will easily carry the weight of an adult and dog. The stated weight capacity is 265 lbs. Starboards tends to be conservative with weight ratings. Their board can carry the weight without a weight rating of 300-350 lbs. Many paddleboard makers are generous with what they say their board can float.

  • Size – 12′ x 33″ x 6″ thick
  • Weight – 21.6 lbs
  • Weight Capacity – 265 lbs
  • Material – 2 Layer woven PVC fusion laminate with welded seams
  • Paddle – No paddle included
  • D-Rings – 8
  • Accessories – Double action pump, backpack, repair kit

Starboard igo rating

What we liked

  • Stiff lightweight durable board
  • Welded seams and woven construction
  • Excellent on water performance. Very stable and tracks well.

What we didn’t like

  • Does not include a paddle
  • High cost

The Bluefin Cruise 10’8″ Paddleboard is a very stiff sturdy board that comes in a very complete package. It includes everything you need to paddleboard and also a kayak seat and paddle that can be set up with 1 or 2 blades. It’s design is very stiff and stable making it perfect for paddle boarding with your doggy.

This board is one of the stiffest inflatable boards available adding to it’s stability. Bluefin claims they use the highest thread density in their drop stitch available from any board maker. They use a very thick 2 layer laminate construction. The board feels noticeably thicker and heavier when you roll it out to inflate it. The extra thick material will make it stand up to scratches from your dog’s claws. This board weighs in at 29 lbs making it one of the heavier inflatable SUP boards.

Like most inflatable boards, it has a short deck pad that doesn’t extend to the front. Consider adding more EVA traction pad to the front for your dog to sit on.

Overall this is a great package for a paddle boarder and dog owner. The kayak seat makes it good for people who want to sit with their dog. The only downside is the very high price for an inflatable paddle board.

The board has 9 D-ring attachments and a GoPro mount built into it. It has a carry straps at the middle, front and back. Because the board is on the heavy side, the extra handles really make it easy for someone to help you carry it. It includes a kayak seat that can attach to the center set of d-rings. The paddle has a 2-3 piece fiberglass shaft and can be assembled as a single blade or 2 blade paddle.

This board has one of the better backpacks available at this price range. It doesn’t have wheels but it has heavy-duty construction with thick comfortable straps. The included paddle has a 3 piece fiberglass shaft. For the price, we would have really liked to see a carbon shaft paddle instead.

On the water performance

The board is 10′ 8″ by 32 inch wide. This gives enough width to be stable and a little better tracking than a 10′ board. It is still easy to maneuver and suitable for taking your dog along as a passenger.

  • Size – 10′ 8″ x 32″ x 6″ thick
  • Weight – 29 lbs
  • Weight Capacity – 287 lbs
  • Material – 1000 Denier Exo Surface Laminate Technology PVC. 2 layer laminate
  • Paddle – 2 piece fiberglass shaft, 2 blades. Can be put together as an SUP or Kayak paddle
  • D-Rings – 9
  • Accessories – Paddle, backpack, leash, dual action pump, kayak seat, built in GoPro mount

Bluefin Cruise Rating

What we liked

  • Very complete package including a kayak seat and 2 blade paddle
  • Croco-diamond EVA deck pad with kick pad at the rear
  • Very stiff and durable board

What we didn’t like

  • The board is a bit heavy carrying around
  • Very high cost

6 – NRS Thrive Inflatable SUP Board

NRS Thrive product image
  • Heavy-duty Construction – 3 Layer PVC drop-stitch construction and double sidewalls increase durability to handle the abrasion and abuse of an adventurous lifestyle.
  • Super Rigid Board – Inflates to 20 psi (1.379 bar) for super rigid performance and folds compactly for easy storage and transport.
  • Over Pressure Valve – Top-quality Leafield D7 inflation/deflation valve for unsurpassed reliability plus a pressure relief valve to prevent accidental over-inflation.
  • Proprietary Axis Technology – an acrylic stiffening agent integrated into the deck, improves stiffness and performance without adding weight or making the board harder to fold and store.

The NRS Thrive is a solid durable high quality all around paddleboard. NRS or Northwest River Supplies is an employee owned company that produces high quality paddling equipment. The NRS Thrive paddleboards use traditional 3 layer construction for stiffness and durability. They use a proprietary acrylic stiffner in their fabric they call Axis Technology. This gives the board added stiffness. The boards have a nice clean deck without a lot of bungees and D-Rings for your dog to walk or sit on.

The board is availble in several lengths that suit different size paddlers. The 10’3″ and 10’8″ are the 2 most common sizes. These cover a weight range from 110 to 250 lb paddlers.

The boards use standard traditional 3 Layer construction. You won’t find fusion construction or welded seams here. The boards come out stiff and durable but they are heavier than the boards made by Red Paddle Co or Starboard. Weight isn’t always bad since it helps make the board more stable on the water in waves and chop. 3 Layer construction will make the board stand up to dog claws better than 2 or 1 layer construction.

There is an overpressure relief valve next to the inflation valve. Many boards have valves that will release pressure above a certain level. They are built into the inflation valve so they don’t stop you from overinflating the board. The NRS Thrive boards have a seperate valve so you can’t overinflate and damage the board. If you accidentally set your electric pump on max and walk away for a while, you won’t come back to a damaged board.

The boards have an EVA deck pad with textured surface for a good grip. They have a center carrying handle as well as 2 handles in front of the carrying handle. These make the board easy to grip and hold when your sitting on it. The board has 4 D-Rings in front with a bungee and 1 D-Rings at the rear of the board for attaching a leash. Overall the deck is clean which makes it better for dogs that don’t like walking on a lot of bungees and D-Rings.

The board has 3 removeable fins. It comes with 3 small fins and 1 touring fin. You can swap out the touring fin for a small fin for different uses. This is nice if you are paddling somewhere with very shallow water or rocks where the deep fin may hit bottom.

The NRS Thrive boards do not come with a paddle or leash. You will need to pickup a paddle if you don’t have one already.

They include a backpack, double action pump and repair kit. The double action pump is a standard pump. It works and there isn’t much else to say about it.

The backpack has nice padded straps. Its got some cinching straps to keep the board secured inside the bag. The bag has no wheels which is a bit of a miss.

On the water performance

The NRS Thrive 10.3 has a nice all around shape. It is good for flat water as well as small waves. The 32 inch width is stable enough while not being so wide that the board can’t go through waves and chop. The glide and tracking are decent. It will track better with the deeper touring fin installed. It still does okay with 3 small fins.

It has a weight capacity of 200 lbs. The 10.8 length version is a little larger and suitable for paddlers from 200 to 250 lbs. The boards have enough stiffness to handle weight without feeling bouncy. If you have a larger dog you should choose a board length with enough capacity for you and your dog.

  • Size – 10’3″ x 32″ x 5″ thick, 10’8″ x 34″ x 6″ thick
  • Weight – 10’3″ – 25 lbs, 10’8″ – 29 lbs
  • Weight Capacity – 10’3″ – 200 lbs, 10’8″ – 250 lbs
  • Material – 1 Layer PVC with 2 layers on the sides
  • Paddle – No paddle included
  • D-Rings – 5
  • Accessories – Double action pump, backpack, repair kit

NRS Thrive Product Rating

  • Good tracking and handling on the water with different fin options

The Isle Surf and SUP Pioneer is their widest and most stable inflatable board. This makes it an excellent choice for taking your SUP pup out with you. Isle Surf and SUP are known for making good boards with excellent customer service. The Pioneer lives up to their standard of high quality construction and performance.

The Pioneer is 10’6″ long by 34inches wide making it very stable. It has grown a few inches wider over previous versions of the Pioneer. The extra width and length combine with generous tail width for a very stable board. It has a weight capacity of 300 lbs making it suitable for taking out a large dog.

The board is made from dual layer military grade PVC. This makes it durable and resistant to scratches from dog nails.

The one miss to the Isle Pioneer when it comes to dog paddle boarding is the deck pad. It is a little short going forward. You may want to install a traction pad forward on the board to give your dog more grip.

The board comes with a 3 piece carbon adjustable paddle. The pump is only a dual action which makes it a little slower to inflate. For the price, we would have liked to see a triple action pump. The backpack is made from durable materials with enough padding on the straps to be comfortable for a decent hike to the water.

On the water performance

On the water, the Pioneer is very stable thanks to its extra width. It has plenty of flotation for both you and your dog. It can easily accommodate an average sized person with a large sized dog. Despite its width, it still tracks well and paddles easily. It won’t be as fast as a touring board but still has decent glide and tracking.

  • Size – 10′ 6″ x 34″ x 6″ thick
  • Weight – 24 lbs
  • Weight Capacity – 300 lbs
  • Material – Dual layer military grade PVC laminate
  • Paddle – 3 piece carbon paddle
  • D-Rings – 11

ISLE Pioneer rating

What we liked

  • Wide stable design
  • Carbon shaft paddle and nice backpack
  • Paddle holders built into the board

What we didn’t like

  • Only comes with a single chamber pump
  • Not as many D-Rings as other boards

  • We stand by the quality of our board and are glad to provide a 1 year manufacturer’s warranty at no additional cost

The ROC Inflatable Paddle Board is a durable solid performer. It is one of the most popular SUP boards available for good reason. It checks off all the boxes for what a stable, easy to use, paddle board should have. It is a stable, easy to use, good performer on the water.

The board uses a 3 layer PVC laminate which should make it hold up and not scratch or puncture easily from a dog’s nails. The deck uses a diamond grid EVA pad which is comfortable to stand on, provides a good grip, and drains water well. It has the typical eva deck pad that doesn’t go to the front of the board. You might want to add more pad for your dog at the front.

Overall, the ROC inflatable SUP board is a great easy to use inflatable paddleboard with good features for taking out with your furry friend. It is an excellent package and good overall value for well under $400.

The board comes as a complete package including a 3 piece adjustable paddle, and backpack. The one miss is the paddle can sink if you leave it in the water too long. Remember that if you set the paddle in the water while you take care of your dog.

On the water performance

The ROC board is 10 feet long by 32 inches wide. This makes it long enough to paddle easily and track well while being easy to maneuver. The width makes it stable for paddling with your dog. The round nose and tail make it stable and easy to turn. It works best in flat water. It is lively enough to handle light surfing if your pooch is up for a little more adventure.

  • Size – 10′ x 32″ x 6″ thick

  • Weight Capacity – 300 lbs

This board is constructed of 6 oz fiberglass weave with a foam core. It has an IXPE foam deck pad that covers the entire board. Your dog will have no trouble with grip on the fully padded pup deck. There are pre-installed D-rings that can be used for storage or attaching a kayak seat. There are bungee cords and the front and rear.

This board is from a South California based company with a US presence. Owners have gotten good customer service when they have had issues.

The paddle board comes as a complete package including a board bag, paddle and leash. The board bag is a nice touch for keeping the board clean and protected when it’s on top of your car or truck.

The SUP board is easy to setup. A tool is needed to attach the center fin. It doesn’t snap in without tools like the other boards in this review.

On the water performance

Once you are on the water this is a very well behaved paddle board. The width makes it very stable. The 3 fins give it good tracking for a board of this length. A hard paddle board will have better tracking since it doesn’t flex as much going through chop and waves. This board shape is best for flat water use although it can handle some choppy water.

SUP boarding with A dog Guide

Here are a few things to consider when you want to take your dog paddleboarding with you. It is important to get the right board. It is important to spend time with your dog getting them used to your board and the water. Make sure you bring along the essentials such as life jackets and dog treats.

Get the right board for you and your dog

Find the right SUP board for you and your pooch. If your a beginner get something wide and stable. If your an experienced paddle boarder you can choose something more advanced. Make sure the board has enough weight capacity for you, your dog, and your gear. A larger deck pad or full deck pads can make it easier for your dog to stand on the paddle board.

Some dogs trip on and do not like the bungee cords most boards come with. You might find they are more comfortable on the board if you remove the bungees.

Get used to your board before taking your dog out on it

Get used to your board before taking the dog out on it. If your a new paddle boarder, spend some time getting used to paddling your board around. Get used to balancing on your board. Your dog may not like getting dumped into the water unexpectedly. If you are not comfortable on your board, your dog will know and won’t be comfortable either.

Trim your dog’s claws

If your dog has large or sharp claws it can scratch or puncture your SUP board. Trim them before letting your dog walk around on your board.

Get your dog comfortable with your board

Spend some time on land getting your dog used to your board. Let it sniff and get used to your board and walk around on it. You can set your board down on the beach and let your dog explore it. You can set it in shallow water and let your dog walk on it before you take off somewhere.

Get your dog comfortable with water

You should know whether your dog likes water or not before taking them out on a SUP board. If your furry friend loves the water this will be no problem. If they don’t care for the water that much they can still join you. You’ll want to be extra careful not to dump them in the water out in the middle of the lake. They may be a bit nervous being away from shore.

Life jackets for you and your dog

The US Coast Guard considers paddleboards vessels and you’ll be legally required to bring one along for you. See this article by the World Paddle Association to learn more about life jackets and SUP boarding.

A life jacket is a good idea for both you and your dog. You never know when you’ll get splashed by big waves or your dog will decide to jump in and spill you both. Wearing a life vest gives you and your dog a little more safety if your dog decides to swim too far away.

Don’t forget the dog treats

A few treats can help encourage your dog to get on the paddleboard with you. They can be used to encourage good behavior on the paddleboard. Bring some treats along in a waterproof bag to keep your pooch happy.

Watch out for your dog when paddling

As a paddler, it’s very easy to hit your dog with the paddle if you’re not careful. They walk around the board. Some dogs like sitting right at your feet. You might need to adjust your paddle length shorter.
