ISLE Pioneer rating

The Isle Surf and SUP Pioneer is their widest and most stable inflatable board. This makes it an excellent choice for taking your SUP pup out with you. Isle Surf and SUP are known for making good boards with excellent customer service. The Pioneer lives up to their standard of high quality construction and performance.

The Pioneer is 10’6″ long by 34inches wide making it very stable. It has grown a few inches wider over previous versions of the Pioneer. The extra width and length combine with generous tail width for a very stable board. It has a weight capacity of 300 lbs making it suitable for taking out a large dog.

The board is made from dual layer military grade PVC. This makes it durable and resistant to scratches from dog nails.

The one miss to the Isle Pioneer when it comes to dog paddle boarding is the deck pad. It is a little short going forward. You may want to install a traction pad forward on the board to give your dog more grip.

The board comes with a 3 piece carbon adjustable paddle. The pump is only a dual action which makes it a little slower to inflate. For the price, we would have liked to see a triple action pump. The backpack is made from durable materials with enough padding on the straps to be comfortable for a decent hike to the water.

On the water performance

On the water, the Pioneer is very stable thanks to its extra width. It has plenty of flotation for both you and your dog. It can easily accommodate an average sized person with a large sized dog. Despite its width, it still tracks well and paddles easily. It won’t be as fast as a touring board but still has decent glide and tracking.

  • Size – 10′ 6″ x 34″ x 6″ thick

  • D-Rings – 11
  • Accessories – Double action pump, repair kit, leash, backpack
What We Liked

✔️ Paddle holders built into the board
What We Didn’t Like
Only comes with a single chamber pump
Not as many D-Rings as other boards

iRocker Nautical rating

iRocker has been a well respected name in inflatable paddle boards in recent years. There iRocker and Blackfin lines are great performers with good customer service. The iRocker Nautical is their entry level paddleboard. It has enough width and stability to work well for you and your pup.

The iRocker Nautical has double layer construction with heavy feeling materials. It should stand up well against scratches and punctures from a dog’s claws. It has 11 D-Rings around the board as well as carry handles at the front and rear. Most other boards in this range only have a center carrying handle. The board is still relatively lightweight at around 20 lbs.

The deck pad is EVA with grooves for traction and drainage. It extends almost to the rear of the board. It gives enough traction but not as much as diamond tread pads on other boards. Like most inflatable paddle boards it doesn’t extend to the front of the board. You might consider adding more traction pad to make sure your dog has good grip.

The paddle has a 3 piece fiberglass shaft and plastic blade. It uses the same blade as their higher end models. On the water, it feels good. It’s not as stiff as a carbon paddle but still feels good.

All the accessories are better than you find on most boards in this price point. The bag looks and feels durable. The leash has a nice neoprene cuff. The pump is a double action type.

On the water performance

On the water the board performs well. It is stiff enough to feel stable. It has a typical entry level board shape that is easy to turn and tracks well. The 240 lb weight limit is reasonable. If you are towards the higher end or have a large dog you might be better off with the 11′ 6″ version of the board. The board tracks well with the 3 fins and is still easy to turn. You could use it for any flat water use and it would be okay for small wave surfing as well.

We really like this board. It is one of the best values out there for taking your dog paddle boarding with better construction and features than most boards at this price point.

  • Size – 10′ 6″ x 32″ x 6″ thick
  • Weight – 20 lbs
  • Weight Capacity – 240 lbs
  • Material – Dual layer PVC laminate
  • Paddle – 3 piece with fiberglass shaft
  • D-Rings – 13
  • Accessories – Backpack, leash, dual action pump
What We Liked
✔️ Great performing board and paddle with good construction and features
✔️ Flip lock fittings on all 3 fins allow you to change to a bigger single fin for touring or 3 fins for normal use
✔️ Lots of D-Rings and carry handles give you options for carrying and mounting seats and accessories
What We Didn’t Like
Deckpad could use more texture
Overall there are very few negatives to this board.

ROC inflatable SUP rating

The ROC inflatable paddle board is a durable solid performer. It is one of the most popular SUP boards available for good reason. It checks off all the boxes for what a stable, easy to use, paddle board should have. It is a stable, easy to use, good performer on the water.

The board uses a 3 layer PVC laminate which should make it hold up and not scratch or puncture easily from a dog’s nails. The deck uses a diamond grid EVA pad which is comfortable to stand on, provides a good grip, and drains water well. It has the typical eva deck pad that doesn’t go to the front of the board. You might want to add more pad for your dog at the front.

Overall, the ROC inflatable SUP board is a great easy to use inflatable paddleboard with good features for taking out with your furry friend. It is an excellent package and good overall value for well under $400.

The board comes as a complete package including a 3 piece adjustable paddle, and backpack. The one miss is the paddle can sink if you leave it in the water too long. Remember that if you set the paddle in the water while you take care of your dog.

On the water performance

The ROC board is 10 feet long by 32 inches wide. This makes it long enough to paddle easily and track well while being easy to maneuver. The width makes it stable for paddling with your dog. The round nose and tail make it stable and easy to turn. It works best in flat water. It is lively enough to handle light surfing if your pooch is up for a little more adventure.

  • Size – 10′ x 32″ x 6″ thick

  • Weight Capacity – 300 lbs

Bluefin Cruise Rating

The Bluefin Cruise 10’8″ paddleboard is a very stiff sturdy board that comes in a very complete package. It includes everything you need to paddleboard and also a kayak seat and paddle that can be set up with 1 or 2 blades. It’s design is very stiff and stable making it perfect for paddle boarding with your doggy.

This board is one of the stiffest inflatable boards available adding to it’s stability. Bluefin claims they use the highest thread density in their drop stitch available from any board maker. They use a very thick 2 layer laminate construction. The board feels noticeably thicker and heavier when you roll it out to inflate it. The extra thick material will make it stand up to scratches from your dog’s claws. This board weighs in at 29 lbs making it one of the heavier inflatable SUP boards.

Like most inflatable boards, it has a short deck pad that doesn’t extend to the front. Consider adding more EVA traction pad to the front for your dog to sit on.

Overall this is a great package for a paddle boarder and dog owner. The kayak seat makes it good for people who want to sit with their dog. The only downside is the very high price for an inflatable paddle board.

The board has 9 D-ring attachments and a GoPro mount built into it. It has a carry straps at the middle, front and back. Because the board is on the heavy side, the extra handles really make it easy for someone to help you carry it. It includes a kayak seat that can attach to the center set of d-rings. The paddle has a 2-3 piece fiberglass shaft and can be assembled as a single blade or 2 blade paddle.

This board has one of the better backpacks available at this price range. It doesn’t have wheels but it has heavy-duty construction with thick comfortable straps. The included paddle has a 3 piece fiberglass shaft. For the price, we would have really liked to see a carbon shaft paddle instead.

On the water performance

The board is 10′ 8″ by 32 inch wide. This gives enough width to be stable and a little better tracking than a 10′ board. It is still easy to maneuver and suitable for taking your dog along as a passenger.

  • Size – 10′ 8″ x 32″ x 6″ thick
  • Weight – 29 lbs
  • Weight Capacity – 287 lbs
  • Material – 1000 Denier Exo Surface Laminate Technology PVC. 2 layer laminate
  • Paddle – 2 piece fiberglass shaft, 2 blades. Can be put together as an SUP or Kayak paddle
  • D-Rings – 9
  • Accessories – Paddle, backpack, leash, dual action pump, kayak seat, built in GoPro mount
What We Liked
✔️ Very complete package including a kayak seat and 2 blade paddle
✔️ Croco-diamond EVA deck pad with kick pad at the rear

Best Rigid Paddle Board For Dogs

South Bay Board Co. Premium Big Cruiser Paddle Board

  • The Big Cruiser is 104x32x5 with 195L of volume and supports riders of all ages up to 350 lb
  • With its squared off rails for extra stability this SUP is perfect for beginners
  • Closed-cell EPS foam core, triple stringer system, and 6oz resin layers on top and bottom for durability

South Bay Board Anima Hard Paddleboard rating

The South Bay Board Co. Premium Big Cruiser Paddle Board has a stated capacity of 350 lbs. This is a hard board with an all around use shape. It is really only good up to about 300 lbs so consider that when wondering if you and your larger dogs can go together. It should be fine for almost anyone and a small dog.

This board is constructed of 6 oz fiberglass weave with a foam core. It has an IXPE foam deck pad that covers the entire board. Your dog will have no trouble with grip on the fully padded pup deck. There are pre-installed D-rings that can be used for storage or attaching a kayak seat. There are bungee cords and the front and rear.

This board is from a South California based company with a US presence. Owners have gotten good customer service when they have had issues.

The paddle board comes as a complete package including a board bag, paddle and leash. The board bag is a nice touch for keeping the board clean and protected when it’s on top of your car or truck.

The SUP board is easy to setup. A tool is needed to attach the center fin. It doesn’t snap in without tools like the other boards in this review.

On the water performance

Once you are on the water this is a very well behaved paddle board. The width makes it very stable. The 3 fins give it good tracking for a board of this length. A hard paddle board will have better tracking since it doesn’t flex as much going through chop and waves. This board shape is best for flat water use although it can handle some choppy water.

Paddle Board Specifications Specifications

  • Paddle Board Dimensions (L x W x H): 10’4″ (ft.) x 32’’ x 5’’

SUP boarding with A dog Guide

Here are a few things to consider when you want to take your dog paddleboarding with you. It is important to get the right board. It is important to spend time with your dog getting them used to your board and the water. Make sure you bring along the essentials such as life jackets and dog treats.

Get the right board for you and your dog

Find the right SUP board for you and your pooch. If your a beginner get something wide and stable. If your an experienced paddle boarder you can choose something more advanced. Make sure the board has enough weight capacity for you, your dog, and your gear. A larger deck pad or full deck pads can make it easier for your dog to stand on the paddle board.

Some dogs trip on and do not like the bungee cords most boards come with. You might find they are more comfortable on the board if you remove the bungees.

Get used to your board before taking your dog out on it

Get used to your board before taking the dog out on it. If your a new paddle boarder, spend some time getting used to paddling your board around. Get used to balancing on your board. Your dog may not like getting dumped into the water unexpectedly. If you are not comfortable on your board, your dog will know and won’t be comfortable either.

Trim your dog’s claws

If your dog has large or sharp claws it can scratch or puncture your SUP board. Trim them before letting your dog walk around on your board.

Get your dog comfortable with your board

Spend some time on land getting your dog used to your board. Let it sniff and get used to your board and walk around on it. You can set your board down on the beach and let your dog explore it. You can set it in shallow water and let your dog walk on it before you take off somewhere.

Get your dog comfortable with water

You should know whether your dog likes water or not before taking them out on a SUP board. If your furry friend loves the water this will be no problem. If they don’t care for the water that much they can still join you. You’ll want to be extra careful not to dump them in the water out in the middle of the lake. They may be a bit nervous being away from shore.

Life jackets for you and your dog

The US Coast Guard considers paddleboards vessels and you’ll be legally required to bring one along for you. See this article by the World Paddle Association to learn more about life jackets and SUP boarding.

A life jacket is a good idea for both you and your dog. You never know when you’ll get splashed by big waves or your dog will decide to jump in and spill you both. Wearing a life vest gives you and your dog a little more safety if your dog decides to swim too far away.

See our guide to the best paddleboard PFDs for some suggestions.

Don’t forget the dog treats

A few treats can help encourage your dog to get on the paddleboard with you. They can be used to encourage good behavior on the paddleboard. Bring some treats along in a waterproof bag to keep your pooch happy.

Watch out for your dog when paddling

As a paddler, it’s very easy to hit your dog with the paddle if you’re not careful. They walk around the board. Some dogs like sitting right at your feet. You might need to adjust your paddle length shorter.
