1 – Nixy Monterey G4 Expedition

☆ Top Pick
Nixy and Red paddling together
What we liked
  • Very stiff rigid lightweight construction
  • 2 air chambers for added safety
  • Big stable fast board that handles well on the water
  • Lots of load carrying capacity
  • Overall high quality feel to board and accessories
  • One of the best roller bags we have seen
  • Designed by paddleboarders who want to create a board that they would want to use
What we didn’t like
  • Not as fast as a narrower touring board
  • It takes some effort to paddle it into wind and chop due to its size

The Nixy Monterey G4 Expedition is a great paddleboard for spending time with your dog. It is a big stable board with plenty of deck space. The deck pads extend almost to the front and rear of the board. The bungee cords are easily removable making the board very dog friendly.

The board is made from woven PVC construction with carbon rail reinforcements. This makes it very stiff. The board is 11’6″ x 32″ wide making on the bigger side. It is very stable. It still moves okay thanks to the narrow nose and tail sections. The board has 3 fins. Performance can be tuned by leaving off the 2 side fins or substituting a larger center fin.

The board has a ton of action mounts around the board for mounting accessories. This is one of the most versatile boards out there that is good for anything from paddling with dogs, SUP camping or SUP fishing.

The Nixy G4 boards come as a complete package with high end accessories. They include a carbon fiber paddle that is light and stiff. The roller backpack has 3 wheels and a ton of MOLLE style loops for attaching things. It is a backpack that is meant for adventure and not just holding a paddleboard.

A double barrel triple action hand pump is included. It is one of the faster and nicer pumps I’ve seen. It can deflate boards. It has removable handles and folding feet to make it more compact.

On the water performance

The Monterey is a very nice handling board on the water. It has been a favorite among beginners who we have let use it. It’s a verys table board thanks to it’s size and width. It moves decently thanks to it’s shape. The 3 fins provide very good tracking. You can take your dog out with confidence on this board that you won’t send them for an unwanted swim.

What we liked
  • Very big stable board that is easy to paddle and can carry a lot of weight
  • Plenty of deck space for a dog
  • Tough heavy duty construction
  • Many available accessories to customize the board for any purpose
  • Stylish woodgrain deck appearance
What we didn’t like
  • High cost
  • The big board can take some effort to paddle into waves and chop
  • No wheels on the travel bag

The BOTE HD Aero is a big versatile board. It can carry large amounts of weight and has one of the widest selections of available accessories. You can customize the board to make it perfect for almost any activity from fishing to river expeditions. The HD Aero is a larger wider board at 11′ x 34″ giving it good glide and stability on flat water and chop. It is a perfect beginner board for heavier paddlers. BOTE boards use 2 layer PVC construction and come with composite paddles. If you want to do so something special with your board, check out the full range of optional accessories.

Accessorizing is one of the things that makes the BOTE brand special. The HD Aero includes some nice extras such as a paddle holder you can mount on the front of the board. They include the best double action single chamber hand pump we’ve seen. The paddle has a composite shaft and feels stiff and light on the water. The only downside is the travel bag. It doesn’t have wheels which is a miss for a board that weighs 30 lbs. The rubberized material that BOTE uses sticks to the board and can make loading the bag more challenging than it needs to be.

On the water

The HD Aero feels like a larger all around board on the water. It tracks well due to its length and 3 fin setup. It’s very stable so your dog can move around without sending you both into the water. It’s a wider board at 34 inches so you will have to do some work to push it into wind and chop. On flat wider it will glide beautifully.

  • Size – 11′6″ x 34″ x 6″
  • Weight Capacity – 300 lbs
  • Board Weight – 30 lbs
  • Construction – 2 Layer
  • D-Rings – 16
  • Paddle – 3 piece composite

3 – Bluefin Cruise SUP

☆ Best Value
Bluefin Cruise Walking towards water
What we liked
  • Very complete package including a kayak seat and 2 blade paddle
  • Croco-diamond EVA deck pad with kick pad at the rear
  • Very stiff and durable board
What we didn’t like
  • The board is a bit heavy carrying around compared to similar sized boards
  • Backpack doesn’t have wheels

The Bluefin Cruise 10’8″ Paddleboard is a very stiff sturdy board that comes in a very complete package. It includes everything you need to paddleboard and also a kayak seat and paddle that can be set up with 1 or 2 blades. It’s design is very stiff and stable making it perfect for paddle boarding with your doggy.

This board is one of the stiffest inflatable boards available adding to it’s stability. Bluefin claims they use the highest thread density in their drop stitch available from any board maker. They use a very thick 2 layer laminate construction. The board feels noticeably thicker and heavier when you roll it out to inflate it. The extra thick material will make it stand up to scratches from your dog’s claws. This board weighs in at 29 lbs making it one of the heavier inflatable SUP boards.

Like most inflatable boards, it has a short deck pad that doesn’t extend to the front. Consider adding more EVA traction pad to the front for your dog to sit on.

Overall this is a great package for a paddle boarder and dog owner. The kayak seat makes it good for people who want to sit with their dog. The only downside is the very high price for an inflatable paddle board.

The board has 9 D-ring attachments and a GoPro mount built into it. It has a carry straps at the middle, front and back. Because the board is on the heavy side, the extra handles really make it easy for someone to help you carry it. It includes a kayak seat that can attach to the center set of d-rings. The paddle has a 2-3 piece fiberglass shaft and can be assembled as a single blade or 2 blade paddle.

This board has one of the better backpacks available at this price range. It doesn’t have wheels but it has heavy-duty construction with thick comfortable straps. The included paddle has a 3 piece fiberglass shaft. For the price, we would have really liked to see a carbon shaft paddle instead.

On the water performance

The board is 10′ 8″ by 32 inch wide. This gives enough width to be stable and a little better tracking than a 10′ board. It is still easy to maneuver and suitable for taking your dog along as a passenger.

  • Size – 10′ 8″ x 32″ x 6″
  • Weight Capacity – 287 lbs
  • Board Weight – 29 lbs
  • Construction – 2 Layer
  • D-Rings – 9
  • Paddle – 3 piece fiberglass convertible
  • Pump – Double action hand pump

4 – GILI KOMODO 10’6″

GILI Komodo paddling on water
What we liked
  • Gili donates a portion of every board sold to ocean charities
  • Wide stable board
  • Good for beginner paddlers
  • Full length deck pad
  • Removable bungees so you can have a clean deck for your dog
  • Higher performance touring fin instead of standard dolphin fin
  • Lots of D-Rings and mounts
  • Fiberglass paddle included but carbon option available
  • Stiff 3 layer construction
What we didn’t like
  • Action mounts not part of front bungee D-Rings
  • Not as fast and nimble as other boards
  • Bag doesn’t have wheels

The GILI KOMODO is an all purpose board designed for taking out pets, doing yoga or paddling with passengers. GILI donates a portion of every board sold to charities that help clean up the ocean and protect marine animals. You can feel good about supporting GILI.

The Komodo deck pad covers the entire board and it has removable bungees so your dog can sit anywhere on the board. The KOMODO uses stiff 3 layer construction and has a high 340 lb weight capacity. This makes it good for large dogs and larger paddlers.

The board has a standard 3 fin setup. All 3 fins are removable. The center fin is more of a touring design than the standard dolphin fin most boards come with.

The paddle has a fiberglass shaft. They have a carbon paddle option for an extra $50. The fiberglass paddle feels good and is a step up from any aluminum paddle.

A basic double action hand pump is included. It gets the job done. If you don’t like pumping you can upgrade to an electric pump. GILI frequently has a free electric pump on your first order if you sign up for their newsletter.

The bag is nicely padded and has some storage pockets and molle loops. It does not have wheels which is a miss at this price point.

On the water performance

The KOMODO is a nice stable board that has good manners on the water. It’s not the fastest board out there. The 33 inch width gives it good stability for beginner paddlers. It’s stable enough that your dog can move around a bit without tipping the board.

Tracking is good with the 3 fin design. The board performs well without the side fins on flat water thanks to the higher performance center fin. Beginners will appreciate the extra stability and stronger tracking with the side fins.

  • Size – 10’6″ x 33″ x 6″
  • Weight Capacity – 340 lbs
  • Board Weight – 21 lbs
  • Construction – 3 Layer
  • D-Rings – 18
  • Paddle – 3 piece fiberglass (carbon option available)
  • Pump – Double action hand pump

  • Stiff, light and durable woven construction
  • High quality feel to board and accessories
  • Extra handles in front and behind standing position
  • US Fin box for center fin making it easy to swap fins
  • Fishing ruler printed on the deck pad
What we didn’t like
  • Not as fast as narrower boards
  • It takes some effort to get the board and pump back into the bag

The THURSO SURF Max is the SUV of paddleboards. It’s big and can hold a lot of weight. It has a lot of features like handles, action mounts, and paddle holders. It has a deck pad that extends the full length of the board that is perfect for your dog to sit on. It has a ruler printed on the deck pad for fishing. It’s got a GoPro mount built into the nose to capture all your adventures with your dog. It’s built with 2 layer woven construction with carbon fiber reinforcements in the rails. This board is designed to handle any adventure and any size dog.

Thurso packaged the Max with a triple action, double chamber hand pump, carbon paddle, leash, repair kit, and roller backpack. The paddle is one of the better carbon fiber SUP package paddles. It’s stiff and feels good on the water. The double barrel pump makes inflating it by hand easier. The roller backpack has enough handles and pockets to handle your accessory gear.

On the water

The Max is a long wider board. It is very stable. You can concentrate on your dog and sightseeing and not focus on staying upright. It would work well for larger beginner paddlers. It’s long enough to have good glide and tracking on flat water. It will handle waves and chop well thanks to its stability. It will take some effort to push through the chop.

  • Size – 11′ 6″ x 34″ x 6″
  • Weight Capacity – 300 lbs
  • Board Weight – 31 lbs
  • Construction – 2 Layer Woven with Carbon Rails

What we liked
  • Longer medium width board has good speed and tracking but is still stable enough for new paddlers
  • Paddle holders built into the board
  • Carbon shaft paddle and nice roller backpack
  • Plenty of deck pad space for for a dog
What we didn’t like
  • The 2 small side fins aren’t removable.
  • No built in action mounts

The ISLE Explorer 2.0 is a longer board with good speed and stability. ISLE is one of the most popular SUP brands. They make boards with excellent quality and durability. The Explorer 2.0 is a board for people who want a larger board that can carry weight but don’t want a slow wide board. The Explorer is more of a touring shape than a wide stable all around or fishing SUP. It has enough deck space for a large dog to sit in front of you. This is a good choice for larger paddlers or paddlers with larger dogs that need more room than a 10′ or 10’6″ all around board.

The board comes with a carbon paddle, roller bag, ankle leash, repair kit, and double action hand pump. The package includes a double action hand pump. At this price, we would like to see a triple action pump. To make up for it they do include an electric pump. Everything else is high quality and looks like it belongs on this level of SUP package.

On the water performance

The Explorer 2.0 has very good tracking and glide thanks to its length. It is still stable enough for beginner paddlers. You won’t risk dumping your dog in the water due to an unstable board. It doesn’t turn as easily as a shorter board which is the only downside. It moves through chop and small waves easily due to its smaller width.

  • Size – 11′6″ x 32″ x 6″
  • Weight Capacity – 300 lbs
  • Board Weight – 24 lbs
  • Construction – 2 Layer
  • D-Rings – 13
  • Paddle – 3 piece carbon
  • Pump – Double action hand pump

7 – iRocker All Around 11 Ultra

AA11 Ultra paddling fast
What we liked
  • It’s a fun faster board to paddle
  • Has good glide
  • Can accommodate heavier paddlers at least up to 250 lbs
  • Board is stable enough for beginners on calm water
  • Bag is small and compact making it easy to store and travel with
  • Includes an electric pump instead of hand pump
  • Weighs less and is easier to carry than legacy All Around 11
  • Has plenty of D-Rings and action mounts of using a kayak seat and other accessories
  • Stiff and durable 2 layer woven construction
  • 5 piece carbon adjustable paddle that fits inside the small bag
What we didn’t like
  • Board is a little less stable than legacy All Around 11
  • Deeper fins are more prone to catch weeds
  • Paddle shaft has a joint where I hold it with my lower hand.
  • No action mounts on the rear of the deck pad
  • No wheels or option for wheels on the bag

The iRocker All Around 11 Ultra is the ultra compact paddleboard from iRocker. The Ultra makes it easier to fit your board in your car with your dog and all the The iRocker All Around 11′ is one of my favorite boards I’ve had the joy of trying out this year. It’s a bit of a beast to carry around and load into it’s bag. I’m super excited for this new version of the All Around that takes a great board design and makes it much easier to transport and store.

Past iRocker boards used a 3 Layer PVC construction. The new Ultra series of boards use a more advanced 2 Layer Woven construction. This is similar to what Starboard uses with their Deluxe series boards. It’s stiff and light.

The All Around 11′ Ultra is a 11′ x 32″ board that has a good all purpose shape. To make it fold into a half size bag they split the deck pad down the middle and changed it from 3 fins to 2 fins. They include a 5 piece paddle and their great electric pump instead of a giant double barrel hand pump.

Quality and durability are what you expect to find in an iRocker board. As always there are lots of D-Rings and accessory mounts to customize the board for any adventure.

The iRocker All Around 11′ Ultra goes a new direction with accessories. They heart of this package is the new compact bag. It is about half the size of a normal paddleboard bag. It will fit places a normal bag won’t like the front seat of your car or your apartment closet.

They no longer include a hand pump. They give you the excellent iRocker electric pump. This is one of the best and fastest electric pumps available. I don’t miss a large double chamber hand pump at all.

A 5 piece carbon paddle is included that can fit into the compact bag. It is stiff and performs well. My bottom hand falls right on a joint while paddling. I can feel it and there is a little wobble. I’ll gladly take that for a board I can travel with much easier.

On the water performance

This new version of the All Around has everything we’ve come to love about the old All Around 11′. It glides well. It is stable enough for beginner paddlers without being extra wide and slow. The main difference that effects paddling performance is a twin fin setup instead of 3 fins. This was needed so the board can fold in half. The 2 fins have very good tracking and don’t add any more drag. The only downside is you need a couple more inches of water depth.

The main downside to the new All Around Ultra vs the old All Around Ultra is the weight capacity. The regular iRocker All Around 11′ has a weight capacity of 435. The All Around 11′ Ultra has a weight limit of only 290 lbs. I think iRocker is being very conservative with this number. Woven construction boards have proven to be very stiff. I would feel comfortable recommending this to a large person with a large dog.

  • Good customer service and quality

What we didn’t like
  • Side bite fins are not removable

The Atoll 11 Inflatable SUP is a great choice for paddling with a dog. It is a large board at 11′ x 32″ with a big 315 lb max rider weight. Atoll has a very good reputation for making good paddleboards and excellent customer service.

The board has a large deck pad extending to the rear of the board and plenty of room for gear and accessories. There is plenty of room for a dog to sit in front or behind you on the board. There is a front bungee to use for storage. No rear bungee is included although there are enough D-Rings to add one. Some dogs don’t like stepping or sitting on bungees. It uses 2 layer construction giving it good stiffness. It weighs in at only 21 lbs which is impressive given it’s size.

The accessories included are okay for the price. The carbon paddle is the highlight. The bag is well made but has no wheels. Only a double action hand pump is included. For the price it should be a triple action pump.

On the water performance

It has a narrow nose and tail giving it a bit more speed than other boards of this size. The width makes it stable enough for beginners or paddlers going with with their furry friends. 9 – ROC Explorer 10

ROC Explorer paddling together
What we liked
  • Lightweight and easy to carry
  • Diamond grooved EVA deck pad
  • Stable, easy to paddle design good for lightweight beginner or experienced paddlers
What we didn’t like
  • The backpack tears easily and isn’t durable
  • The paddle will fill with water and sink if it’s in the water long enough

The ROC Inflatable Paddle Board is a durable solid performer. It is one of the most popular SUP boards available for good reason. It checks off all the boxes for what a stable, easy to use, paddle board should have. It is a stable, easy to use, good performer on the water.

The board uses a 1 layer PVC laminate on the bottom and 2 layers on the deck which should make it hold up and not scratch or puncture easily from a dog’s nails. The deck uses a diamond grid EVA pad which is comfortable to stand on, provides a good grip, and drains water well. It has the typical eva deck pad that doesn’t go to the front of the board. You might want to add more pad for your dog at the front.

Overall, the ROC inflatable SUP board is a great easy to use inflatable paddleboard with good features for taking out with your furry friend. It is an excellent package and good overall value for well under $400.

The board comes as a complete package including a 3 piece adjustable paddle, and backpack. The one miss is the paddle can sink if you leave it in the water too long. Remember that if you set the paddle in the water while you take care of your dog.

On the water performance

The ROC board is 10 feet long by 32 inches wide. This makes it long enough to paddle easily and track well while being easy to maneuver. The width makes it stable for paddling with your dog. The round nose and tail make it stable and easy to turn. It works best in flat water. It is lively enough to handle light surfing if your pooch is up for a little more adventure.

  • Size – 10′ x 32″ x 6″
  • Weight Capacity – 300 lbs
  • Board Weight – 17.5 lbs
  • Construction – 1 Layer
  • D-Rings – 7
  • Paddle – 3 piece aluminum
  • Pump – double action hand pump

10 – Chasing Blue Infinite All Around

man paddling outdoormaster infinite sup
What we liked
  • Stable, easy to paddle, and works with paddlers up to its 320 lb weight limit
  • Stiff woven 2 layer construction at a low price
  • 22 D-Rings and lots of handles for versatility and easy transport
  • Quality accessories such as roller backpack
What we didn’t like
  • It takes a little more effort to paddle into chop than narrower boards
  • Accessory and action camera mounts included but not installed on board

The Chasing Blue Infinite is a great all around board that can be used by beginners and experienced paddlers. It is 10’6″ long and 34″ wide. The weight capacity is rated at 320 lbs and we have tested with an over 300 lb paddler. This board will have plenty of weight capacity for most paddlers and any size dog. The tail is narrowed to make it easier to turn and suitable for small wave surfing. This makes the board very stable and easy to paddle so you won’t risk spilling your dog.

Besides its size and stability, this board is loaded up with features. It has 22 D-Rings for attaching bungees and accessories. It comes with a front and rear bungee. It also includes a variety of GoPro, Camera, and accessory mounts you can attach to the board.

It has 7 handles to make it easy to carry. It also has 2 safety handles at the front that you can grab on it while seated or kneeling while the board goes through waves. It has a very durable 2 layer laminate construction with taped reinforced rails that can take some abuse. At 22.5 lbs it is still easy for one person to carry.

The deck pad is really well thought out. The footpad is grooved for easy water drainage and foot comfort. The tail kick pad is a diamond grid pattern to give you a bit of extra traction for kick turns. The foot pad is large enough that it will fit most paddlers with room for an average sized dog.

The Chasing Blue Infinite is one of the best paddleboard values out there. It is one of the easiest to learn to paddle and versatile enough to grow and let you try out other SUP activities such as rivers, waves, and yoga.

This board includes all the accessories you expect from an inflatable paddleboard package. It includes a double action pump, 3 piece aluminum paddle, ankle leash, paddle leash, repair kit, and waterproof cellphone case. It has a great roller backpack to make carrying easier. The bag is very well made. The only complaint is that the bag has no extra pockets for accessories or other items.

Sometimes the board is bundled with the OutdoorMaster Shark 2 electric pump making it an even better value. See our review of the Shark 2 pump to learn more.

On the water performance

On the water, the Chasing Blue Infinite is very stable due to its 34 inch width. It is one of the easiest boards available for a beginner to stand up on. It still glides reasonably well. Better than a 10′ or shorter board. Its 3 fin setup makes it track well. This board will grow with you and will be fine for trying out small wave surfing or yoga.

The board glides and paddles very easily on calm water. It takes a little more effort to paddle into chop and wind due to its wide width and 10’6″ length. It turns very easily thanks to its narrowed tail. This would make an excellent board to enjoy paddling with your dog.

  • Size – 10′ 6″ x 34″ x 6″
  • Weight Capacity – 320 lbs
  • Board Weight – 22.5 lbs
  • Construction – 2 Layer woven
  • D-Rings – 22

paddle boarder with a small dog

SUP boarding with A dog Guide

Here are a few things to consider when you want to take your dog paddleboarding with you. It is important to get the right board. It is important to spend time with your dog getting them used to your board and the water. Make sure you bring along the essentials such as life jackets and dog treats.

Get the right board for you and your dog

Find the right SUP board for you and your pooch. If your a beginner get something wide and stable. If your an experienced paddle boarder you can choose something more advanced. Make sure the board has enough weight capacity for you, your dog, and your gear. A larger deck pad or full deck pads can make it easier for your dog to stand on the paddle board.

Some dogs trip on and do not like the bungee cords most boards come with. You might find they are more comfortable on the board if you remove the bungees.

Get used to your board before taking your dog out on it

Get used to your board before taking the dog out on it. If your a new paddle boarder, spend some time getting used to paddling your board around. Get used to balancing on your board. Your dog may not like getting dumped into the water unexpectedly. If you are not comfortable on your board, your dog will know and won’t be comfortable either.

Trim your dog’s claws

If your dog has large or sharp claws it can scratch or puncture your SUP board. Trim them before letting your dog walk around on your board.

Get your dog comfortable with your board

Spend some time on land getting your dog used to your board. Let it sniff and get used to your board and walk around on it. You can set your board down on the beach and let your dog explore it. You can set it in shallow water and let your dog walk on it before you take off somewhere.

Get your dog comfortable with water

You should know whether your dog likes water or not before taking them out on a SUP board. If your furry friend loves the water this will be no problem. If they don’t care for the water that much they can still join you. You’ll want to be extra careful not to dump them in the water out in the middle of the lake. They may be a bit nervous being away from shore.

Life jackets for you and your dog

The US Coast Guard considers paddleboards vessels and you’ll be legally required to bring one along for you. See this article by the World Paddle Association to learn more about life jackets and SUP boarding.

A life jacket is a good idea for both you and your dog. You never know when you’ll get splashed by big waves or your dog will decide to jump in and spill you both. Wearing a life vest gives you and your dog a little more safety if your dog decides to swim too far away.

See our guide to the best kayak PFDs for more information.

Don’t forget the dog treats

A few treats can help encourage your dog to get on the paddleboard with you. They can be used to encourage good behavior on the paddleboard. Bring some treats along in a waterproof bag to keep your pooch happy.

Watch out for your dog when paddling

As a paddler, it’s very easy to hit your dog with the paddle if you’re not careful. They walk around the board. Some dogs like sitting right at your feet. You might need to adjust your paddle length shorter.
