The Top 5 Best Electric Scooters For Hills

We are only considering electric scooters with 500 watts and more. We looked for scooters that are a good compromise between cost, weight, power and range. Below are our top 5 picks for best hill climbing electric scooters.

There are some really high powered scooters out there with thousands of watts of power. If you are interested in learning more about very high powered electric scooters, see my review of the 6 most powerful electric scooters available today.

Top Pick

  • Powerful power: D6 + is a high-performance dual motor driven, double suspension electric scooter, equipped with an independent 1000W motor in the front and rear
  • Large capacity battery pack: D6 + is equipped with a 52v26ah lithium battery pack, with a maximum range of about 50 miles.
  • Safe braking system: D6 + is equipped with front and rear EBS hydraulic disc brake system.

The Nanrobot D6+ is a very high powered, long range elecric scooter. With twin 1000 watt motors it has 2000 watts of power. This scooter has plenty of power for steep hills even with heavier riders. The battery capacity allows for up to 50 miles of range.

This scooter is built more like a motorcycle or moped than a standard electric kick scooter. This is a serious machine for commuting or traveling long distances or just a joy ride at higher speeds.

It has coil sprung and hydraulically damped suspension at both the front and rear wheel along with 10 inch pneumatic wheels. This gives it a very smooth and comfortable ride.

The only downside to this scooter is the high weight. At 77 lbs it’s not easy to just pick up and carry with you into the office. It has a folding design so that it can take up less space.

This is our top pick for best electric scooter for hills due to it’s high power and battery capacity as well as smooth fun ride.

Segway Ninebot MAX Electric Kick Scooter

  • Revolutionary Upgrade of Electric Scooters: With powerful 350W motor, Segway Ninebot MAX can reach to 18. 6 mph, travel up to 40. 4 miles and max load of 220 lbs
  • Portable Folding Design: One-step folding system for easy portability. Segway Ninebot MAX electric scooter can be folded with ease in mere 3 seconds
  • Rider: Weight Capacity: 66.1-220.5 lbs | Recommended Age: 14+ years | Required Height: 311-66

The Segway Ninebot Max is Segway’s most powerful electric scooter. At 42 lbs it is still portable enough to carry onto a subway or into the office.

This scooter has a max speed of just under 19mph. It has a peak power of 800 watts. It will go up most hills without too much struggle if you pay attention to the max rider weight of 220 lbs. It doesn’t have the beastly hill climbing power of the 1600 watt and up electric scooters. It doesn’t weigh 70 to 120 lbs either.

The Ninebot Max has pneumatic tires and small amount of front and rear suspension giving it a relatively smooth ride. It’s not as smooth as the larger scooters with coil suspension. It’s not as rough as smaller scooters with solid wheels.

It is packed with a lot of technology. It has easy built in battery charging, an LED display and integrated Bluetooth with a phone app.

This is my pick for best electric scooter for hills. It has the best compromise between brute power and lightweight portability. If you live somewhere with lots of hills and need to carry your scooter onto public transportation this could be the scooter for you.

UberScoot 1600w 48v Electric Scooter

  • Motor: 1600 Watt (Brushless).
  • Top Speed: 30mph (speed limit wire must be disconnected)
  • Batteries: Four 12V/12AH (48 volt system) Sealed Lead Acid (SLA). Charging Time: 6-8 hours

The Uberscoot 1600 watt scooter is a high performance electric scooter. It weighs 117 lbs making it not very portable for those who need to carry their scooters. Think of it more as an electric moped than an electric kick scooter.

This scooter has tons of power for hill climbing and a good top speed at 30mph. It easily powers up hills. It does it comfortably thanks to it’s front and rear suspension design.

The range of this scooter is short at only 12 miles. This is due to it’s use of Lead Acid batteries instead of Lithium batteries. Lead acid batteries are much heavier and larger for the same capacity and voltage. This scooter is great for climbing hills and fun to ride. It has the potential to be much better with lithium batteries.

  • Top Speed – 30mph
  • Range – 12 miles
  • Power – 1600 watts
  • Max Rider Weight – 265 lbs
  • Scooter Weight – 117 lbs
What We Liked

JOYOR X5S Electric Scooter

  • SUPERIOR PERFORMANCE – The battery capacity of the JOYOR X5S electric scooter is 500W able to carry 265 lbs.
  • MOST SAFE & COMFORTABLE RIDING – The mechanical anti-lock braking system makes the brake respond more quickly.
  • PORTABLE FOLDING DESIGN – The electric scooter can be quickly folded. After folding, the X5S scooter can be carried one-handed.

The Joyor X5S is a solid entry from a lesser known scooter brand. It claims 500 watts of power and delivers solid range and load capacity. It is lighter than most higher powered electric scooters at only 33 lbs.

Most users are able to achieve between 30 and 40 miles depending on rider weight and terrain. This is notably better than most lower cost scooters that have a useable range of 10 to 15 miles.

The scooter has good acceleration and hill climbing ability for 500 watts. Going up hills will slow it down some. The scooter is capabable of going up to 23mph if you disable the speed limiter. It has more power than the 15mph advertised top speed suggests.

Their warranty response is not great if you have issues with the scooter. They are not as quick to respond as well known brands such as Segway. The durability of the headlights and some accessory components is not as good as it could be.

Overall this is a solid performing scooter with good hill climbing performance in a lower weight, more portable design.

  • Top Speed – 15.5 mph
  • Range – 40.3 miles
  • Power – 500 watts
  • Max Rider Weight – 265 lbs
  • Scooter Weight – 33 lbs

Magnum Premium IMAX S1+ Adult Electric Scooter

  • PREMIUM-QUALITY & CREATIVE DESIGN – Made with high-quality aluminum alloy and sporting a metallic black finish, the S1+ Electric Scooter is durable and built to last.
  • SAFE & RELIABLE BREAK SYSTEM – The Magnum S1+ is fitted-out with a Tektro Mechanical Disc brake system.
  • RIDE WITH POWERFUL SPEEDS– The Magnum S1+’s powerful 48V/10A battery drives the dynamic 500W motor at speeds up to 20MPH.

The Magnum Premium IMAX S1+ is a good 500 watt class scooter with a price tag a bit on the high side. It is a good performer but priced much higher than other similar power level scooters.

It easily reaches 20mph on flat lands even with heavier riders. It will slow down a lot on hills but still go up them. To get really good uphill speed you need a 1000 watt plus scooter.
Construction is almost all aluminum and feels very well put together.

It only has a mechanical rear disc brake. This brake is not as strong as a hydraulic brake or a combination of front and rear disc brakes. Braking performance is not super quick. Front and rear brakes are common on most electric scooters.

The 10 inch pneumatic tires give it a pretty smooth ride over most cracks and ruts in the pavement.

At 36 lbs it is still pretty easy to carry around. It is a good compromise of power and weight. The price is a bit high for a 500 watt electric scooter.

  • Top Speed – 20mph
  • Range – 20 miles
  • Power – 500 watts
  • Max Rider Weight – 230 lbs
  • Scooter Weight – 36 lbs

Hill Climbing Electric Scooter FAQ

Q: How much power is a watt?

Watts are a unit of power similar to Horsepower. 745.7 Watts are equal to 1 hp. Your 300hp internal combustion car engine is also a 223,710 watt engine.

It takes more power to climb steeper hills. The bigger the hill and the rider, the more power is needed. A 250 watt scooter may not be able to go up a steep hill without you giving it some kick to help. A 3000 watt scooter may not even slow down going up the same hill.

It takes more power to go faster. You need more power to overcome more drag and friction as you go faster.

To learn more about watts go here.

Q: Can electric scooters go up hills?

Yes, electric scooters can go up hills. The more power a scooter has, the easier it will go up hills. A low powered scooter may slow down to a walking speed to go up a hill. A high powered electric scooter may not slow down at all going up the same hill. A higher powered scooter can carry heavier riders up steeper hills.

The best compromis between power and portability is the Segway Ninebot Max. It is light enough to be portable but has enough power and range to carry adult riders up hills and over long distances.

Q: What is the best electric scooter for adults?

The best overall compromise for electric scooter is the Segway Ninebot Max. It has good power and range in a light package. This is my choice for best adult electric scooter unless you lived somewhere with a lot of steep hills such as San Francisco.

Q: Can I ride E scooter in rain?

The answer is, it depends on the scooter. Some scooters have water resistance and water proof ratings. You need to check the particular scooter you are interested to see if it has a water resistance rating. To learn more about the IP ratings and what they mean go here.

Q: How do I choose an electric scooter?

You need to decide how far you need to go on your electric scooter. Keep in mind that distance ratings on electric scooter are usually optimistic. As the scooter battery ages, the range will go down.

If you live somewhere with a lot of hills, you need to look at higher powered scooters. Look for at least 500 watts of power. If you live somewhere flat, you can get buy with a lower powered scooter.

How heavy are you? You need to look for an electric scooter with enough weight capacity. If you pick something borderline you will probably find it doesn’t have good performance on hills or range.

How fast do you want to go on your scooter? What do you local laws allow you do ride on streets?

After you figure out your needs for an electric scooter you can then go shopping for one that fits all of them.

Q: What is the best electric scooter for San Francisco hills?

The Nanrobot D6+ has tons of power, high rider capacity, high top speed and long range. There are more powerful and bigger electric scooters out there for much more money. The cost goes up a lot for not a lot more performance. Unless you want a scooter that can go 50mph or can go 90 miles. The Nanrobot D6+ has tons of power for going up hills and would be perfect for riding around San Francisco.

Q: How long can an electric scooter last?

An electric scooter can last for several years. With proper maintenance and care you should get at least 5 years out of any electric scooter and more.

An electric scooter doesn’t require much maintenance but it does require some. Taking care of the battery properly can really keep a scooter going much longer. See my article on electric scooter maintenance to learn what you need to do to care for a scooter.
