Summary

The Outdoor Master Shark 2 Pump is one of the best electric SUP pumps available today. It is one of the most popular SUP pumps on Amazon for good reason. I have been using one since the beginning of last summer and it does what it says. It reliably inflates paddleboards without overheating to any pressure up to 20 psi. It has a built in cooling fan allowing it to inflate 3 or more boards in a row. We have used it on hot days to inflate a few boards at a time. It can inflate and deflate. The second stage is a bit loud once it kicks in but so is every pump we have tried so far. If you want a reliable electric pump that works, this is the one for you.

Summary

The Nixy Ventus Electric SUP Pump is another good option if you need to pump up several boards in a row. This would be our runaway favorite pump if it just inflated boards faster. The manufacturer claims it can pump up to 10 boards in a row. We have inflated over 7 in a row testing it. It has a separate cooling fan like the OutdoorMaster Shark 2 pump to keep it from overheating. It takes several minutes longer to inflate a board than the iRocker pump. This pump has a lot of good features besides being able to pump up several boards. It comes with a really nice carrying bag. It has a nice cord organizer built into the bottom. There is an available battery as well.

The Outdoor Master Cachalot is a great value pump that can inflate boards fast. It doesn’t have the active cooling of the O.M. Shark 2 making it less expensive. It is designed to be able to inflate 2 boards in a row which is all that many paddleboarders need. When we have to inflate 3 or more boards we start using more than 1 pump to save time. This pump is reliable and durable and has been a workhorse for us so far. If you don’t need to inflate 3 or more boards, the Cachalot is a great choice.

Summary

The OutdoorMaster Whale Rechargeable SUP Pump is great for battery powered pump. This is my personal favorite and most used pump. The ability to inflate and deflate boards away from your car with an electric pump is a game changer for convenience. I have had a Whale for a few months now and it is my most used pump. It’s pricey but the built in battery makes it worth the added cost.

This pump may seem expensive. An external battery for another pump will set you back $80 to $100. The price for the Whale is very reasonable when you factor in the combined battery and pump cost for other brands.

It has a built in 6000mah Li-Ion battery with enough charge to inflate more than 1 paddleboard. This pump can use the built in battery or a 12 volt car out making it incredibly versatile. The only real downside is it’s on the heavy side. It weighs 6.25 lbs. Its electric pump can inflate at least 2 boards on a charge. The pump has a built in active cooling fan similar to the popular Shark Pump. It can pump more than one board without overheating.

The Verdict

The Outdoor Master Shark 2 is a very reliable pump that can inflate several boards in a row without overheating. It’s one of the most popular pumps out there with a tested and proven design. For those wanting more features such as a storage bag and available battery check out the NIXY Ventus.

Electric paddleboard pump guide

There are several good electric pumps out there. They are not a 1 size fits all solution. Do you need to pump up several boards in a row? Is small size more important to you? What about battery power so you can use it away from your car. Let’s take a quick look at some of the most important features you should consider when looking at an electric paddleboard pump.

Single action vs double action

There are two types of electric paddleboard pumps: single action and double action. Single action pumps have one mode, which is high pressure. Double action pumps have two modes: high volume low pressure and low volume high pressure. Double action pumps inflate boards several minutes faster than single action pumps. Here’s how it works: when you’re inflating your board, the double action pump will alternate between high volume and high pressure. This means that you’ll get more air into your board in less time. And, when you’re trying to inflate your board to a high PSI, the double action pump will switch to low volume and high pressure, so you can get the perfect inflation every time.

Double action pumps tend to be larger and more expensive than single action pumps. I haven’t seen a single action pump yet that can also deflate boards.

Ability to inflate multiple boards

If you’ve ever tried to inflate a paddleboard with a manual pump, you know it’s not an easy task. And if you need to inflate several boards in a row, you’ll definitely need an electric pump that can handle the job. Pumps meant for inflating several boards have a separate built in cooling fan to keep the motors and sensors from overheating. Pumps without active cooling will overheat and can damage themselves after inflating 2 to 3 boards. So if you’re planning on inflating more than a few paddleboards, make sure you get a pump with an active cooling system.

Battery power

Some pumps such as the Outdoor Master Whale have a built in battery that the pump can run off of. This allows you the freedom to inflate boards with your electric pump anywhere. Alternately you can get a batter pack to run your electric paddleboard pump. Being able to inflate and deflate away from a car makes electric pumps much more convenient to use.

Size

Some pumps are much smaller than others. We love our Outdoor Master Whales but they are a very large pump. If you want to pack your pump inside your SUP bag you need to pay attention to the size of the pump. The Outdoor Master Dolphin is very compact. The iRocker Electric Pump is very low profile for a 2 stage pump.

Here is a picture of the most popular pumps side by side front and top view for size comparison.

Cord storage

Some paddleboard pumps have built in ways to store the cords and air hose. The iRocker pump has a compartment on the side for storing the 12 volt cord. The NIXY Ventus has a cord holder on the bottom and comes with a carry bag that can fit the air hose. Having storage for the cords and hoses helps keep your storage space and car much more tidy.

Universal Pumps – Can they inflate any board?

Almost all inflatable stand up paddleboards use an Halkey Roberts or H3 valve. Every electric pump comes with this valve. Some come with extra valves for use with other kinds of inflatables. All H3 valves are not exactly the same. Some need a thicker or thinner gasket on the valve. Most pumps come with a few different gaskets so they will work with any paddleboard.

Warranty and customer service

Most electric paddleboard pumps have a 1 year warranty. I haven’t seen any pump manufacturer offering any more. Some vendors are much easier to get warranty service than others. iRocker, NIXY and Outdoor Master are pretty responsive. SereneLife and SEAMAX have seem to be almost impossible to contact for warranty claims. You save money on a cheaper pump but you roll the dice if the pump stops working.

Helpful Tips for inflating your paddle board

Inflating your paddle board is a simple and easy task. It gets much easier if you use an electric pump. There are a few things to remember when blowing up your inflatable SUP. Here are a few tips for inflating your paddle board with an electric pump.

Don’t over inflate your inflatable SUP

Nothing will kill your inflatable SUP faster than over inflating it. If you put too much air in you can do permanent damage. If the air pressure inside is too high, the seams or drop-stitch threads may separate or break. If you break a seam you might be able to repair it using repair tape. If you break the drop-stitch threads, the SUP board will no longer hold it’s shape and it’s not repairable. If you see a lump in the board or other deformed shape, there is a good chance you broke some drop-stitch threads.

Inflate on a Landing Mat, blanket or tarp

Concrete, gravel, rocks, brush, and debris on the ground can scratch or puncture your board. To keep your iSUP looking new you should put down a landing mat to inflate it on. This will keep it from getting scratches or damage while inflating.

Newport fully rolled

Check the pump before inflating another board – is it cool enough

Overheating can damage an electric SUP pump. Most pumps are good for 1 or 2 boards before they need to cool down. Before hooking your SUP electric pump up to another board, feel how hot it is. It should not be burning to the touch. Most pumps have an overheat protection built in, but not all. Check for this in the SUP pump manual before using it.
