If this is your first electric bike, there is a lot of terminology to learn when it comes to electronics. Finding a battery that will work with your electric bike is pretty simple. Once you have chosen the voltage and power you want from the bike, it’s time to choose a battery. Let’s look at the most important factors in choosing the best battery for electric bikes.

Voltage

Battery voltage needs to match the voltage your motor is designed for. Your electric motor will go a max rpm that is proportional to the input voltage. If you get a motor designed for 52 volts and use a 36 volt battery you will probably have a very slow electric bike. If you buy a 52 volt battery to use with a 36 volt motor, the motor will probably burn out trying to go too fast. 48 volt motor and batteries seem to the happy medium for making a 750 watt electric bike.

When it comes to voltage, a 48 volt battery is outputting 48 volts average for most of it’s discharge cycle. It will output higher voltage at 100% charge and lower voltage when it’s almost empty.

Amp Hours

Amp Hours are a measure of capacity for your battery. Think of it as equivalent to how many gallons of gas your car or motorcycle tank can hold. A 48 volt 500 watt power system is going to use between 10 and 25 amps in normal operation. Loads may be higher going up hills or with a heavier rider. A 15 amp hour battery will give you 1 hour of power at 15 amps current. If your bike can go 20mph at 15 amps of current draw, your range will be 20 miles with a 15 amp hour battery. It will give you 1.5 hours of power at 10 amps giving you 30 miles of range.

This sounds great, just buy the biggest battery right? That can be an okay strategy. The bigger the battery, the bigger the cost and the heavier the battery gets. A 20 amp hour battery may cost double what a 10 amp hour battery costs. A 10 amp hour battery may easily fit inside the frame of your bike, a 20 amp hour battery may not.

Max Current

Batteries are designed with a max current. If you exceed this current, the battery may be damaged or worse, a fire could happen. Most batteries have fuses to prevent too much current draw. Some BMS (Battery Management Systems) also have over current protection built into them. If you plan to use a 1500 watt motor you need to make sure that the battery can handle the current to give you 1500 watts of power. You may find yourself constantly hitting the over current cutoff in the BMS or blowing fuses.

Max Wattage

Wattage or power is equal to the volts * amps. If you have a 48 volt batter and it has a maximum current of 30 amps, it’s max wattage will be 48 * 30 = 1440 watts. 48 volts is the normal voltage. Fresh off the charger it may be closer to 52 volts. This battery will give you somewhere between 1440 and 1560 watts of peak output.

Mounting Method

When you look for a battery for an electric bike you need to think of how you are going to mount the battery on the bike. Maybe you need to carry it in a backpack. Some batteries will mount to the bike frame downtube where the water bottle mounts are. Some can strap into the frame with velcro straps. There are also some nice frame bags available for holding loose batteries. Bike racks are another nice way to mount your battery.

You need to look at your bike and see where you might mount the battery. A full suspension mountain bike is very difficult to mount anything inside the frame. A hardtail mountain bike, hyrbid or road bike is very easy to mount inside the frame.

Charging

Most electric bike batteries come with chargers. Some work much better than others. Most need 6 to 8 hours to charge the battery. If you want to fast charge the battery you may need to look for a fast charger that can do the job faster. The charge port for your electric bike battery may have a current limit. Always check the manual for the battery or consult the manufacturer if you want to fast charge.

Battery Chemistry

There really isn’t a good reason to use anything but a Lithium Ion battery these days. They are reliable. They are safe as long as you follow charging precautions in their manuals. Lithium batteries give you much better energy density than lead acid or nicad/nimh battery cells. This means more range and power for your electric bike if you use lithium ion batteries. Lead acid car batteries are much heavier than Lithium Ion Batteries. A lead acid battery that can go 20 miles might be 5 times larger and heavier than a Lithium Ion battery.

They will cost less for the same capacity. That is really the only advantage of a lead acid battery. They are relatively cheap.

You need to choose a battery that matches the voltage needs of your electric bike. If you have a 48 volt motor you need a 48 volt battery. If you have a 36 volt motor you need a 36 volt battery.
