ROC inflatable paddleboard rating

The ROC inflatable paddle board is a durable solid performer. It is one of the most popular cheap SUP boards available for good reason. It clicks off all the boxes for what a recreational paddleboard should have. It is a stable, easy to use, good performer on the water. It can be used for flat water, small waves, SUP yoga or even fishing if you want to give it a try.

The board has a standard 3 fin setup. 2 fixed and one removable fin. The detachable fin uses a plastic clip to attach which is easy to use and holds the fin securely in place.

The board uses a 3 layer PVC laminate which should make it hold up and not scratch or puncture easily. The deck uses a diamond grid EVA gripping pad which is comfortable to stand on, provides a good grip, and drains water well. This board is one of the only boards under $400 that uses a 3 layer laminate.

Overall, the ROC inflatable SUP board is a great affordable paddleboard with good features and performance. It is an excellent package and good overall value for well under $400.

The board comes as a complete package including a 3 piece adjustable paddle, and backpack. The accessories are all the level you would expect for the price. You won’t find a carbon paddle, but you will find a solid aluminum paddle and a reliable dual action pump. The downside to the paddle is that it can sink if you leave it in the water too long.

On the water performance

The ROC board is 10 feet long by 32 inches wide. This makes it long enough to paddle easily and track well while being easy to maneuver. The width makes it stable for beginner paddlers. It won’t be the fastest board on the water at that length. The round nose and tail make it stable and easy to turn. It works best in flat water. It is lively enough to handle light surfing.

  • Size – 10′ x 32″ x 6″ thick

iRocker Nautical rating

iRocker has been a well respected name in inflatable paddle boards in recent years. There iRocker and Blackfin lines are great performers with good customer service. The iRocker Nautical is their entry level paddleboard. It is more than competitive with any $500 inflatable SUP on the market today.

The iRocker Nautical has double layer construction with heavy feeling materials. It should stand up well against scratches and punctures. It has 13 D-Rings around the board as well as carry handles at the front and rear. There are enough D-Rings to add a kayak seat if you want to sit on the board. The board has a bungee cord for storage at the front. The board is still relatively light weight at around 20 lbs.

The board uses standard flip lock fittings on all 3 fins. You can get a larger center removable fin and remove the 2 outer fins if you want better touring performance. The 3 fins give it excellent all around performance. As with all flip lock connections you need to be sure they are locked in. Otherwise it’s easy to lose a fin out on the water. Sand inside the lock can make them a little tricky to lock.

The deck pad is EVA with grooves for traction and drainage. It extends almost to the rear of the board. It gives enough traction but not as much as diamond tread pads on other boards. Some people prefer smoother pads so it’s a personal preference kind of thing.

We really like this board. It is one of the best values out there with better construction and features than most boards at this level. It is out top pick for the best affordable, budget friendly SUP.

The paddle has a 3 piece fiberglass shaft and plastic blade. It uses the same blade as their higher end models. On the water, it feels good. It’s not as stiff as a carbon shaft paddle but it’s much better than any aluminum paddle. The blade is strong enough to stand up to some abuse.

All the accessories are better than you find on most boards in this price point. The bag looks and feels durable. The leash has a nice neoprene cuff. The pump is a dual action single chamber type.

On the water performance

On the water, the board performs well. It is stiff enough to feel stable. It has a typical entry level board shape that is easy to turn and tracks well. The 240 lb weight limit is reasonable. If you are towards the higher end of that you might be better off with the 11′ 6″ version of the board. The board tracks well with the 3 fins and is still easy to turn. You could use it for any flat water use and it would be okay for small wave surfing as well.

  • Size – 10′ 6″ x 32″ x 6″ thick
  • Weight – 20 lbs
  • Weight Capacity – 240 lbs
  • Material – Dual layer PVC laminate
  • Paddle – 3 piece with fiberglass shaft
  • D-Rings – 13
  • Accessories – Carry bag, ankle leash, dual action pump, repair kit
What We Liked
✔️ Great performing board and paddle with good construction and features
✔️ Flip lock fittings on all 3 fins allow you to change to a bigger single fin for touring or 3 fins for normal use
✔️ Lots of D-Rings and carry handles give you options for carrying and mounting seats and accessories
What We Didn’t Like
Deckpad could use more texture
Overall there are very few negatives to this board.

Funwater tiki rating

The Funwater Tiki Paddle Board is one of the best cheap SUP board values available. It is a decent board with good stability and okay accessories at a very low price. You could buy 2 or 3 of these for the price of some other inflatable paddle boards.

The board is 10′ 6″ long by 33 inch wide giving it good width for stability. It’s shape follows current trends for easy to use recreational paddle boards.

It uses a mix of single and double layer PVC laminate construction. Double on the sides and single on the top and bottom. It has an EVA deck pad that is big enough to work for paddle boarding and other activities like yoga. It has 3 removable fins on the bottom. You need to be careful with the fins and the attachment clips.

If you are looking for a cheap way to start paddle boarding, the Funwater Tiki is a great choice. It is one of the cheapest paddle board packages available with better than expected performance. This is our top pick for best value beginner inflatable paddle board.

The board comes as a complete packing including a pump, 3 piece aluminum paddle, double action pump, and backpack. The paddle and backpack are both decent quality and hold up okay. The double action pump is the weak point in the package. Many people have received pumps that leak air before the board gets to 15 psi. If you use the board often you will want to get a different pump, or even better, an electric pump.

On the water performance

The performance on the water is better than expected for such an inexpensive board. It has enough stability for a beginner paddle boarder over 200 lbs. It tracks reasonably well for it’s length. It is not as rigid as a higher end board and you will feel it flex and twist going through waves. It is stiffer than many other boards at this price point.

  • Size – 10′ 6″ x 33″ x 6″ thick
  • Weight – 17.6 lbs
  • Weight Capacity – 330 lbs
  • Material – double layer PVC laminate on the sides. Single layer top and bottom
  • Paddle – 3 piece aluminum paddle
  • D-Rings – 7
  • Accessories – double action pump, repair kit, ankle leash, carry bag
What We Liked
✔️ Low price and high value package
✔️ Good stability
✔️ Lightweight and easy to carry
What We Didn’t Like
The pump could be better. It can leak before getting the board up to pressure
Fins can break if your not careful

Serenelife inflatable paddle board rating

The Serenelife Paddleboard is a great cheap paddle board that still performs well. It’s great for someone who wants to try out paddleboarding but doesn’t want to spend a ton of money. This SUP comes as a complete packing including the board, paddle, pump, leash, and backpack.

The board is rated for 275 lbs but is best suited to lighter weight paddlers especially if you’re a beginner. If you are over 200 lbs you should look at a longer board. The size and width should give good stability. The board is not as rigid as a higher end board which makes it less stable for its size.

The board is 10 feet long and 32inches wide and has a more recreational shape with round bow and square tail. It has a standard 3 fin design. It has a single bungee cord for storage.

The construction of the board is what you would expect at this price point. It has thinner, more plastic feeling material than more expensive boards. It is still a 2 layer laminate so it will be more durable than a single layer board. The foam pad has a nice diamond grid pattern and covers enough of the board.

Overall this board is a good package for first time paddleboarders. It is inexpensive and performs well. It will give you a cheap way to get on the water without much investment. This makes it one of the best budget friendly paddle boards out there.

The included accessories are good for entry level use. The paddle works but it’s more flexible than most paddles. The backpack is durable but doesn’t have much padding in the straps. Fortunately the board is lightweight enough that it’s not too much of an issue.

On the water performance

This board performs better on the water than you expect it to for its price point. It tracks reasonably well thanks to it’s 3 fins. It won’t glade as well as a longer board but it’s still pretty good. This board will feel flexible to a heavier paddler. For lighter weight riders under 200 lbs, it will feel good.

  • Size – 10′ x 32″ x 6″ thick
  • Weight – 19.6 lbs
  • Weight Capacity – 275 lbs
  • Material – 2 layer PVC laminate
  • Paddle – 3 piece aluminum paddle
  • D-Rings – 11
  • Accessories – Carry bag, paddle, ankle leash, pump, repair kit
What We Liked
✔️ Good value for a low cost complete paddleboard package
✔️ Easy to maneuver board shape
✔️ Good for first time paddle boarders who don’t want to invest too much to try out the sport

Paddle is flexible with soft blade

Isle Pioneer rating

The Isle Surf and SUP Pioneer is their widest, most stable board. Isle Surf and SUP are known for making good boards with excellent customer service. The Pioneer lives up to the Isle Surf standard of high quality construction and performance.

The Pioneer is 10’6″ long by 34inches wide making it very stable. It has grown a few inches wider over previous versions of the Pioneer. The extra width and length combine with generous tail width for a very stable board. This makes it a great choice for beginner or heavier weight paddle boarders. It has one large removable fin and 2 small fixed fines underneath for tracking.

The board is made from dual layer military grade PVC. It has handles at the front, back and middle. It has velcro paddle holders on both sides. These are handy for holding the paddle when you take a break. They also work for holding the paddle while your carrying the board. It has a 2 bungee cord setup for storing your gear while paddling.

Overall the Isle Pioneer is a great choice for an entry level affordable inflatable SUP board. It offers good stability, a carbon paddle and an overall well thought out design.

The board comes with a 3 piece carbon paddle. The pump is only a dual action which makes it a little slower to inflate. For the price, we would have liked to see a triple action pump. The backpack is made from durable materials with enough padding on the straps to be comfortable for a decent hike to the water.

On the water performance

On the water, the Pioneer is very stable. It is easy for anyone up to about 240 lbs to stand on. Heavier novice paddle boarders might start having a little challenge. Tracking and maneuverability are still pretty good for a wide board. The board is suitable for yoga and small wave surfing. It tracks as good as any recreational SUP board that isn’t a dedicated touring board.

  • Size – 10′ 6″ x 34″ x 6″ thick
  • Weight – 24 lbs
  • Weight Capacity – 300 lbs
  • Material – Dual layer military grade PVC laminate
  • Paddle – 3 piece carbon paddle
  • D-Rings – 11
  • Accessories – Double action pump, repair kit, ankle leash, carry bag
What We Liked
✔️ Wide stable design
✔️ Carbon shaft paddle and nice backpack
✔️ Paddle holders built into the board

How To Choose An Inflatable SUP Guide

Stand Up Paddle Boards are an excellent way to get around on the water. They are designed to be used anywhere from flat water calm lakes to out in the surf. They are incredibly versatile. Inflatable stand up paddle boards are a convenient solution for those who don’t want the hassle of transporting and storing a hard paddle boards. Who wants to bother with a roof rack every time they use their paddleboard?

What should you look for when want to buy a paddle board? There are many affordable choices out there for a wide range of budgets. How do you choose the best one? It’s important to look at the size, materials, weight and accessories to make the best choice. Lets take a look at all of these below.

All inflatable SUP’s are made of PVC.  This is because PVC is a lightweight durable plastic material that is commonly used in marine inflatables.  PVC is a good choice for inflatable SUP construction because it can be easily thermobonded into the hull shape and the core.  The core of almost all SUP hulls are made from a drop stitch sandwich which is 2 layers of material with connecting threads that maintains a flat shape when inflated.  The drop stitch core is the key to creating the long flat thin board section.

An inexpensive low budget board will use a single layer of PVC. A more expensive board will use a double or triple layer PVC laminate. More layers is better. 3 layers will produce a stiffer, more durable board.

Many boards claim to use Military Grade PVC. This just means they are using thick PVC material. A 3 layer PVC laminate will be better than a single layer Miltary Grade PVC any day for stiffness and durability.

For more information on SUP materials click here.

Weight of SUP

Most inflatable SUP boards weigh between 17 and 25 lbs.  They are all made from PVC, which may be 1 to 3 layers thick. A board made from a 3 layer laminate will be heavier than a single layer board. Some boards have much larger traction pads than others which also adds to the weight.  A longer and wider board will weight more than a smaller size board.

Common inflatable SUP boards tend to be between 9 feet and 12 feet long.  The longer a board is, the better it will be at gliding across the water and the less you’ll have to work while paddling on flat water. A longer board will also get blown around by the wind more so there is a trade off.    Anyone over 200 lbs should look at boards that are at least 10′ 6″ long. A lighter paddler can get by with shorter boards.

The wider a SUP board is, the more stable it will be.  A 33 inch board will feel much more stable to stand on than a 29 inch board.  The wider a board is, the more drag it will have going through the water so the slower it will feel.  As a beginner or if you plan on doing SUP Yoga on the board, you will want it to be as wide as possible. Beginners should look for a board at least 32 inches wide.

Weight Capacity And Volume

SUPs are available in a large range of sizes.  The board volume determines how much float an inflatable SUP will have.  Look at the weight ratings and volume of the board you plan on buying to see if it is big enough.  As a beginner paddler, you will want to error on the side of more volume.  A board with marginal flotation can be very unstable and hard to stand on. If you want a high volume, high stability board see my article on SUP boards for big guys. See our article on how much weight a paddle board can hold to learn more.

Most paddleboards have some number of D-Rings attached to them. D-Rings are used to attach accessories such as kayak seats. D-Rings with a bungee cord mounted to them makes a great place to store your PFD or other gear on a hot day. More D-Rings is better. More D-Rings can be glued on if your board doesn’t have one where you would like

Inflatable SUP Board Packages

Almost all inflatable SUP boards come as package that includes accessories such as a paddle, carrying bag, leash and pump.  Sometimes they include dry bags or waterproof phone cases as well. A more expensive board will have better accessories. As price goes up, they start including fiberglass or carbon paddles. Above $600 most inflatable boards come with triple action instead of double action pumps. At higher price points, the carrying bag will get thicker straps and thicker, more durable materials.

My advice is to buy the board with the best materials and paddle that fits within your budget. A carbon or fiberglass paddle will be much more enjoyable to paddle with than a flexible aluminum paddle.

Eventually, you’ll want an electric pump for inflation, so the included pump will at most become a backup. See our guide to the best electric SUP pumps to learn more.

Inflatable SUP FAQ

Q: How Much Do Inflatable SUPs Cost?

An inflatable SUP package (board, pump and paddle) can run anywhere from $200 to well above $1500.  Many good options are available in the $200 to $500 price range.  Don’t feel you need to buy a $1000 SUP to enjoy the sport.  Many people have a lot of fun on low cost boards.  Some features that come on high end boards include carbon paddles and things like that. Sure a carbon paddle is nice but it definitely is not at all essential.

Q: Do I need To Wear A PFD While Using An SUP?

That one is up to you and what you are comfortable with. I personally almost always wear one. According to the US Coast Guard SUPs are classified as “Vessels” meaning that there should be a USCG-approved life jacket also known as Personal Floatation Device (PFD, Type III) for each person, a sound signaling device (whistle), visual distress signal and navigation light (flashlight). For more information click here.

For my recommendations for SUP PFD’s see my article on Paddle board PFDs and my article on inflatable belt pack PFD’s for SUP.

Q: How Long Do Inflatable SUPs Last?

If well cared for an inflatable SUP board can last for many years.  The key is keeping it dry and clean and out of UV light when not in use. Any board should last at least 5 years if well cared for. A board made from higher quality materials and adhesives can last a lot more than 5 years (with good care).

Q: Are Inflatable SUPs Durable?

An inflatable SUP can be more durable than a rigid SUP board because it can bump into rocks or branches without getting a permanent dent.  They can be cut if you hit them hard enough with a sharp enough object.  They are much more durable to small impacts.  If you drop a hard paddle board off the top of your car or truck, you will probably do some damage. If you drop an inflatable paddle board off the roof somewhere, it will bounce off the ground and be fine.
